New (to me) xc70 D5
Hi all Long term Volvo Australia owner
240 740 turbo 850R Wagon (keeping forever) S40 T4 So I just picked up a XC70 D5 2012 model with 87,000km (54.000 miles) The car is really neat and has regular dealer maintenance. So just checking in that this car can be a long term owner with minimal problems... I understand regular maintenance. Will I be disappointed? I will have to sell my Mondeo XR5 (Australian Titanium Volvo 5 pot) for it. |

These D5's will last forever if well maintained.
If nothing else, you absolutely MUST MUST MUST replace the aux belt every 56k or less, else if it snaps you'll need a replacement engine. So unless you have a receipt that it has just been done, go out and get that done right now, before you drive it any further. I would also change the aircon belt at the same time as it doesn't cost much more. Every time you replace the aux belt check that the alternator pulley is not seized as that will prematurely wear the belt

Good tip. What takes out the belt, Age or tensioners? |

It's usually belt age that causes failure on these. The belt aging is made worse if the alternator pulley is seized. I personally do both belts (Aux and AC) at the same time along with the tensioner. I also replaced the alternator pulley on mine at the last change. I'm probably going to do all of that every 40k miles going forward, its a small price to pay compared to the value of the engines in these. The timing belts usually last fine up to the Volvo recommended schedule. The aux belt snapping and getting underneath the timing cover is the big probolem on these.

You can expect the alternator pulley to need replacement after 300000+ km.
Don't forget oil changes in the automatic gearbox, if you have such a box. Volvo claims it's "filled for life", which in a way is correct, but that "life" will be shorter if you don't replace the oil. |

Not the highest mileage but 213k for me at the moment in a 2011, still a happy car.
Towards higher mileage a nivomat might give up and the AC pump's clutch goes with use. Belts can depend on driving style but 50k advice probably a good safety net.
