V70 D5 2003 Exhaust Heatshield fasteners
Good Evening All,
Does any of my fellow Volvo lovers know what fasteners are used to secure the back silencer box heatshield to the studs that are welded on the underside of the body? Where the fasteners should be only has the welded stud at that location and they are a bit crusty and visual access is limited for me.... Thanks in advance, Nobby |

Heat shied plastic nuts.
Part number is 981495 , They are plastic nuts which at the listed prices seem a bit expensive. I replaced mine with some of the plastic blocks used to reinforce furniture drilled slightly undersize and the coarsely threaded stud cut there own thread in the relatively soft plastic.

if it's threaded stud what's wrong with an appropriately sized steel nut and washer. nylock ideally if it's likely to be vibrating

Hi Stuart from what I recall it's a really coarse thread not what I would recognise as a common metric thread also a relatively small diameter so I would guess steel on steel would corrode fairly quickly and then removal would probably shear the stud.

Thanks chaps!
Thanks for your help - much appreciated. I've got some nylon nuts on order which I'll 'bully' down the coarse thread on the stud. The Volvo parts were £12+ but I fould some on Skandix at 3 euros each but the cost of shipping from Germany was showing as 36 euros!!! What are they delivering them by a Eurofighter!? One point I did note along the way is not to have any steel contacting the ally heatshield or galvanic corrosion will occur eating a hole in the heatshield so it's new washer time using some Ally sheet and tin snips.
Cheers, Nobby |
