Default XC60 Polstar D5 oil change advice

Hi,
I need to get a "small" service done (oil and oil filter and pollen filter.)
Volvo dealer quoting me £350 so given it's now over 5 years old, I'm thinking of getting my local garage to do it for a lot less.

Is there any reason a competent, non franchised independent garage would have problems doing an oil & filter change on this car?

It doesn't have a dipstick so how do they know they have exactly the right amount of oil in it? (Apparently, you need to drive it 30kms before you can read the level on the dashboard...)

Also, would they need special equipment to reset the "engine service due" message on the dashboard?

Any advice appreciated.

Thanks
Pete

Have you got any quotes from an Indy to do it ?

My Cars last service was at a main dealer & the invoice said £301 & this included the Aux Belt change (3yr/54,000mile)

The oil was the most expensive part at £76

Will the Indie use the correct spec of oil for the car ? & what price does it come in at ?
Will they overfill the Oil ? check out the issues some have had

The dealer will also do all required software updates (if Any) as part of the service & you also get a years full European Breakdown cover & assistance (I've just checked mine as off to Germany & it's pretty comprehensive)

You might be able to haggle the dealer down a bit, I know they used to do discount on servicing of cars of a certain age (can't recall the age) to keep the business in house.

On my old S60 I used to use an Indie Volvo specialist, when I swapped to my 1st XC60 I got a quote from the Indie & also 2 Dealers. One of the dealers actually quoted me less (It's not the local one though) than the Indie. They also washed & hovered the car & gave me a courtesy car for the day FOC.

My current XC60 I purchased as part of the recent used car event & got the next 2 services for £199 so I'm covered on that score.

I must add I don't work for Volvo or a dealership but in my 20+ years of ownership of Volvo's have found that dealers can be reasonable on price.

Would add that some dealers are far far better than others & it's worth shopping around.

I had mine serviced by an independent garage. He used the correct grade oil, new oil, air, pollen filter also new fuel filter. Done everything by the book, reset service indicator. £240. Very happy with the result.

We use a local volvo specialist, uses volvo parts, and does the services to the volvo maintenance schedule, my last service including aux belt, and pollen filter chnage was £195, volvo was double, we got my fiancees D2 serviced £128 all in vs £229+vat at volvo for the exact same service and parts. You still also get a Volvo specialist stamp in the book :-)

Didn't the volvo dealer quote you for an " Essential Service " ? It was brought in for people like you ..
£350 is the kind of price for a major service !

I know that is why I went for the 5 years. I was paying £26.52 a month on previous one at Bristol Street but they lost the dealership so had to sort a new one with company who took over.

Hi Scoobysn7x,
For info, which Local Volvo Specialist do you use?
Could well be of use to me.

Autofix North East on the Tyne Tunnel trading estate I've used before & were/are pretty good in the Newcastle area.

My cars newer now so is under the care of a Dealer but not the local one.
