Anyone tow with D5? V90cc or similar

Hi. Just wondering if anyone tows with a D5? I wondered what range and MPG I’m likely to get.
I had a xc70 D5 and that used to get just over 300miles towing and 27ish mpg. Hope to get at least 300, as I don’t like filling up with a caravan behind.

Have done a very similar distance towing about 700/800 kilos of rib from Wales/Edinburgh/highlands with my D5 CC and it got about 25/27 average. It wasn’t all ok motorways obviously, and the engine is still strong but it’s not impressive when a 6 cylinder can do just as well.

Interestingly my engine oil level went down rather a lot after towing a big twin axle ifor jobby for a couple of days. The oil level then restored itself - is this normal?


You should be fine to expect a range of 300 miles with considerate driving etc!

I've got a V90 D4 - is that close enough? 55 miles yesterday with a small 1000kg single axle caravan, mostly round the M25 car park. The trip meter told me I'd achieved 32.5 mpg. I filled up this morning (without a caravan) and the range said 350 miles. This was obviously based on my last trip because as I drove my normal commute around the motorway the range shot up to 590.

I tow a Bailey Unicorn Valencia caravan plus a heavy full Awning and lots of kit and my wife's and teenage grandaugher's entire wardrobes (just in case) and carry lots of bottled drinking water and stronger beverages with my D5 XC90 and I average 25mpg on long motorway or main larger carriageways and about 22mpg in the hilly Yorkshire Dales type roads, so a V90 D5 should easily better my averages.
