So now the decision is to stay with just the emergency kit or buy the appropriate spare wheel and tools for the new XC60.

Anyone have a view on this? Is the emergency kit good enough?
I'm pretty sure the jack would be useless as well, because the jacking points are not at the sill seams as in the old XC60.

Default Spare or no spare, that, is the question.

Ask yourself, What are the odds on hitting a pothole and damaging a tyre/rim? on our "well maintained roads" these days
what good would a tube of 'gunge' and an 'inflation can' be .When your stuck in the middle of nowhere,it's hissing down, and it's three am?

Sorry about raining on you parade!
regards,Keith.

Thanks for all the advice. I decided to buy the Tempra spare wheel kit and picked it up last weekend. It came in a large box – wheel and tyre, jack, wrench, foam moulded holder that fits over the battery etc.

Now the mystery. It came with a strange “spacer” (part number 31362301) and a webbing strap. For the life of me I can’t work out what the spacer is for and how the strap is supposed to attach. No obvious fixing points in the void under the tailgate floor.

If anyone has a new XC60 with factory fitted spare wheel, a photo of how it all fits together would be fantastic.

I do know that the webbing holds the wheel down. It is too dark and damn cold to do anything about it now.

I will have a look tomorrow and take a pic.

Can you explain why you think that is so?
I took a look at the owner's manual, I don't see why the jack would be useless.

Actually this was not factory fitted, but a dealer fit option. Before the spare was fitted there was a large storage tray covering the whole area. When that was lifted out the polystyrene moulding for the battery was already in place.
The retaining straps fit through slots on welded in lugs, you should be able to see them in the photographs.

Here are the promised pics:
