Did mine recently. You don't need any specialist tools unless you intend to remove the crankshaft harmonic pulley, in which case this is handy:

It is possible to get the new belt on without removing this pulley - just. You might want to check though that the pulley rubber has not perished. In which case it might be worth replacing this pulley.

I'm only removing the timing belt so I can replace the camshaft seals behind one of the pulleys. It's leaking I think due to a blocked pcv system. I'm doing that at the same time as well. And of course
New belt with tensioner . I assume I can just remove the pulleys and change the seals?

If you are removing the vvt pulley (assuming its ME7) you will need the locking pins for the camshafts. If only removing the front pulley you should be fine with marking them, I'm fairly sure the front pulley is keyed, but I will let someone else confirm.

Yes, I believe it is a ME7.
It's a late 99 model with B5244S
Bosh ECU with a lot of Denso stuff fitted.
It has an electronic throttle body which I have cleaned out a couple of times. No throttle cable.
I'm doing the job because it's developed an oil leak on the front of the engine in the inlet camshaft seal. I believe this has happened partly through age but mainly due to the PCV system being blocked.
So I'm planning to do the whole lot at once. New PCV system.
New timing belt and tensioner and of course be camshaft seals.
Car is a 99 on 134000 miles. It's only ever had the CVVT solinoid and radiator changed. Oh, and the usual ABS and alarm faults.
It's never broken down since we've had it(2002)
Main dealer serviced till about 2012.
Now not being driven as my wife has an XC90 to play with but she doesn't want to sell the 70 as she says it her old faithful and never let her down.
Anyway. It looks like I'm going to need a camshaft locking tool so I don't lose the timing?

You will also need a new camshaft end cap seal. It will need prising out to fit the tool and are a single use item. The camshaft sensor is fitted to the other cam hence only one seal.needed.

Just picked up my a "Gates" timing belt kit.
£90+vat. It actually came with a water pump as well so I thought that was a bonus.
Does mean that this job is turning into a lot to do now!
Water pump
Timing belt
All 4 camshaft seals(thought I might as well)
All new PCV system
Full service I think
Check out the fuel tank sender.
Vida send to think there is a problem with it yet the gauge works??...lol

Default It's done but what's this!?

Finally done the timing belt, water pump, crankcase ventilation, all new injector seals and a new coil pack.
Runs well now except when you want it to crawl on tickover. It kind of kangaroos until you give it a bit more gas. It's not quite right so if anyone knows what the might be please let me know.
Now,...........
I removed the cam position sensor and okay. Then removed the black plug for the exhaust cam and oil leaked out. So I put a new deal on the shipping list. Now. I was amazed to find there was no seal!! It has only ever been serviced by the main dealer, so did the forget to put the seal in. Picture attached.
I've now installed one.
