Volvo Trailer Module - what works out of the box
I am about to diy fit a towbar to my UK 2016 XC60 D5 SE Lux automatic. I need it for towing a boat a short distance and carrying bicycles so do not need stability control or fog light deletion.
The plan was to fit Volvo electrics and the price from FRF is very reasonable however coding at Portsmouth Volvo is very expensive and my local independent cannot do it. The total cost of the Volvo electrics thus make an aftermarket alternative attractive. My question is: if I fit the Volvo Electrics including Volvo trailer module, will anything work without coding (eg side lights, indicator and brake lights). If so I will proceed down this route allowing future caravan owners who want stability control etc the option of coding it in Hopefully somebody will have fitted the trailer module and know what worked |

I've been eyeing-up the pfjones website. Secondhand towbars are all silly prices. Most of them are retractable or detachable. I don't trust it, and while I'm sure it's been throroughly tested and meets all specifications, it's just not a road I want to go down. I don't care about it showing. I'm not trying to make it invisible. I don't care about bumper cuts.
The most basic towbar model on the pfjones site (which conveniently appeals to me the most cosmetically as well as being cheapest) has several electronic options. I'm a bit confused by this, so I had intended to talk to them face to face on the matter. I've used them in the past, indeed the towbar on my current car came from them too, but it had been manufactured wrong. Someone had put a part into a press the wrong way and it was bent the opposite direction to what it should've been, but they quickly made me a new one and couriered it to me as soon as the powder coat had dried. I'm still hoping to find one secondhand while I solve other issues, but it's looking like I'm gonna end up with these guys at this rate. Maybe worth a look? EDIT: Sorry, just realised I didn't actually answer your question. What I was trying to get to, is that if they're supplying different variations of electrickery, then likely there's different tiers of features. I'm guessing stability control will be the most expensive option. |

No it will not work properly at all without the operating software unique to your car. it should not cost a great deal at the dealer, How much were you quoted? They should not charge you more them 18 mins Labour. 0.3 hours is the Volvo standard time for a software download.

All in cost for electric harness, trailer module, software and labour is £191.10 incl VAT. About the same price as a Right Connections aftermarket unit
