A (possibly) DUMB question!
Hello all,
In my 2004 s60 D5 I have the air filter lid warped in the rear, letting air go through unfiltered. Went on Volvo to ask how much for the whole assembly (without MAF).......£209 On ebay see a few of these boxes complete. My (dumb) question is: the air filter boxes are really that different between petrol and diesel engines? Especially when they both are 2.4 litres? How about the diesel vs. the 2 litres petrol turbo? From Ebay pictures i see some differences in air filter boxes, but can be confusing. In this one here (https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2001-VOLV...53.m1438.l2649) it seems pretty much identical to the one I have in the D5. but then again it could be a pic from a D5, not a 2.0T. The only box i know for sure is the one for the XC90. Even the D5 being the same, the air filter box is clearly different (deeper in shape). Please let me know from your experience. cheers |

My 03 D5 was warped in the middle at the back. The lid always managed to sit on the rubbery flange of the filter element. I'm fairly certain that no air was getting by.

Ok. but from what i can see the warped lid on mine seems to past over the thick lip of the filter, if only by a few milimiters, therefore allowing to let some air go through the MAF unfiltered. I've thought to place some foam or tape covering the gap, temporary solution, but certainly better than nothing.

Just how warped is it?
In the case of my petrol (2007 B5244S) the lid's 3 prongs go into 3 corresponding slots. The rear of the box will want to bow inwardly. The filter element does serve to hold the rear side closer to a proper dimension. However, the 3 prongs must be coaxed into their slots with a long screwdriver. On both my P2 V70's someone applied white grease to facilitate insertion. In both cases careless fools have gotten it close then relied on the latches to hold the lid down. It doesn't work that way. Both my cars came with one broken latch. They're ~$11, by the way. You must land and "scoot" the prongs into their respective slots or the lid won't sit flush. Do this whilst moving the box lid up and down as if hinged. Unless your box bottom is truly warped, I'd bet you're just not setting the lid down completely. ps: That both my P2's were exclusively Volvo serviced and each had a broken latch shows you that it's a bit tricky to do right. Or that the particular dealership monkeys assigned to "air filter duty" don't give a damn about their work. Give it another look. Bring a large (25-30 cm long), flat bladed screwdriver. |

As George says, be first sure the lid is properly engaging into the three rear tabs - sometimes it's difficult to properly engage these tabs. Front latches do break, easily replaceable and can also swap their place to have at least one on each side

I generally just take the whole air filter box off the car to get round the tricky lid. Pull off the valve on the front (engine mount), pull plug on MAF, remove air hose then use a 9mm socket on extension to close the prongs holding the air box in place by pushing down on the "spikes" and pop the box off.
Much easier to sort the lid and filter when it's off.
