The morning after driving your car, measure the voltage.

Battery should be 12.3v to 12.8v.
12.8v is a New battery.
12.5v is 3 year old battery.
12.3v is a 5/6 year old battery and time to change it. Look for special offers.
12.2v or less is a dead or bad battery.

I just thought I'd post this old favorite.
When your volt meter shows >12v , it's hard to toss a battery but you gotta remember.....they do have a lifespan. The mechanic 2 doors away used to say, "After 3 years, a battery doesn't owe you a thing".

A battery reading 12.2v is bad enough but add in a cold Winter morning (or the first searing hot Summer day) and you got trouble.

This was a public service announcement.

A timely reminder too, because we're taking a test drive on an old honda CRV for the missus tomorrow

good call, volt meter in boot as well as the good ol' code reader

I'll ring ahead and make sure they don't fire it up until I get there, that's an overnight reading done

cheers

Definitely sound advice. My new to me V70 had a battery voltage of 12.1V on my multimeter on Xmas eve morning before the trader started it up, it started up but sounded laboured so I got him to reduce the price by £100 to factor in a new battery. Got her home, went to start it 3 hours later to nip to RS components and sure enough it was dead. 12.1V but this time just not enough amps.

Default FR ABS ring

Hi my mot is due on my 2002 s60 D5 anyway my ns rear tire is getting low so i had a avon zv7 fitted, then i drove 200 meters up the road and my abs not working lit up, anyway i got home and put the computer on the car and found
it was a BCM-0012 Code FR sensor so i then drove around the corner and back
the code comes back very fast, i then looked at the reading from all sensors
and the FR had spikes with higher speed readings, so today i took the front wheel off and removed the sensor and found that there was a lot of rubbing on it from the tone ring so i removed the drive shaft from the hub and found it was very rusty and once removed i found it was split, and were the split is you can see that the teeth near the crack had been rubbing on the sensor,
if i feel ok tomorrow i will put the car back together,
The weather is not to good and i do not have a garage, and i have been getting a lot of back and leg pain,
anyway this is the 1st tone ring this car has had from new, it has done 109500miles
Thanks Dave, Have a good new year

You'll be looking for work Stuart - CRVs don't break, even when old !

cat theft is rife on most honda cars and very pricey. a stolen cat can render an older honda beyond economical repair.

funny you should say that, it does have a shiny new cat fitted, which I strongly suspect was due to theft..

glad to hear it! we did buy it in the end, it's over 100k but it seems to be hewn from solid granite so far as I can tell, no leaks, a sensor needs replacing, but that's not exactly difficult

couple of little body work issues to polish out but overall a nice solid little runabout
