When I bought the car it'd done around 55k miles and had a FSH, some of those dealer services. I've since had the car serviced by Volvo in the UK, and once again here in France. Again, the diesel filter was not changed. I've done around 75k mile now so I'm guessing it was due!

So, to return to the story, getting the filter changed was both necessary AND a good first step to sorting out the sensor error. It set me back £230ish... the sensor error has not reappeared (touch wood).

OUCH!!!!!!!........................Why so much?

Because I'm a drip and can't convert currency properly!

It was £145 including the mechanic checking error codes on his laptop gizmo thing.

Moral of the story is make sure you change your fuel filter on time. Here are some pictures.
Ours doesn't have main dealer history and this is what it looked like @112k #cowboymechanics

Given on how a mare of a job to change the filters on the XC's I guess some folk will shy away from the job. I pulled (what looked like the original) filter from mine last year.

A) It was a pig,
2) It was black...
G) No change in running or chiggity chugging.

Hmm....I might have a go at this in the near future. My car has 120K miles on it, so could almost certainly use a new filter as preventative maintenance.

As mine is 2WD only, it should be easier to get at the filter. And I have a 32mm socket already.

From the video, it really didn't look very difficult to do.

In case it matters, I've got a V70 FWD and there wasn't enough space for a 32mm socket, so ended up using a 32mm offset spanner.

I think I just couldn't be bothered unbolting something that made it easier to get access to.
Volvosweden on youtube did a video, but I found that after I'd done the job and had a sleeve full of diesel.
