After a 400 mile test drive without any music sob sob sob.

BUT after a very leisurely drive on quite quiet open roads never over 80 MPH and mostly within the speed limits 40/50/60 and 70 i was disappointed to find i only got 37/38 MPG this was even after i blew up the tyres hard to reduce rolling resistance.

GOT a few issues that i could do with some advice on.

idle speed is around 1100/1200 RPM

when i give the car some serious welly it looks like a Boeing 707 doing a take off run either that or a Challenger tank laying down a smoke screen - black smoke not blue or white so it is a fuelling issue.

I have seen some online info on the VW Golf 1.9TD engine 'tuning the IP' setting the idle speed and the fuel mixture so i guess i need to get my hands dirty - need to look at the air filter element too i suppose.

now where is the best place to get good info on this engine - should i just get a manual for the VW Transporter Van or what? i have the Haynes manual which is for the petrol engine only.

ALL thoughts advice suggestions help comments etc welcome

thanks in anticipation

think se stand for saggy end.new nivomats need heavy duty springs also now withweight i put in car.live near norwich norfolk.my old girl will probably go bang just about to put on new tyres.195 65 hr15 instead of 185 on at moment.probably gocheapy route always seemed ok.never go much over 70 anyway.if gets on till spring will get aircon recharged told not worth it in winter.probably do antifreeze as over two years old now.mid life crisis need new toy to play with.thinking nice old jag for weekends as volvo such cheap motoring.totally green even if smokes like parisian hooker.initial energy to make 13 years ago well used up in 163000 miles no rust good for another five maybe ten years hopefully with a few new bits.debate on oil to use and filters.cannot get greenbook for engine any more so i have been told by dealer.don't know what v70diesels do to gallon but depreciation of thousands per year and complex bits to go wrong stick to big old bus.if lottery comes up still keep car spend money on women booze and all other things meant to be bad for us.

I'd say 38 mpg is pretty reasonable in this cold weather. I think the tickover should be about 900 rpm if I remember correctly. My diesel specialist liked to set it at 500 rpm but I found it made the steering wheel vibrate a bit too much for my likeing.

Well i am or was a Rolls Royce & Bentley MV Technician in a previous existence so i should know my way around these cars but i am sorta focused on learning and i just hate reinventing the wheel so the manual will be a good place to start and then there is this forum and a few others too.

please have a look see here http://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showthread.php?t=49118 and see if you can tell me what this switch is for

thanks in anticipation

regards
