'88 740 clutch/gearbox noise
getting a sreaming/grating noise when sitting with clutch depressed. also briefly apparent when meshing into 1st & 2nd.took to local garage who changed release bearing -still no better. he said he'd contacted someone who said it was a centre bearing in the gearbox and was a known problem. I've sourced a second hand 'box but before I put it in has anyone any views to the contrary or further advice.( box I just took out has about 1mm side to side play on input shaft - is this acceptable or indicative of my problem?) cheers.

I'd be more suspect of the thrust bearing as it could do that too.

RE: '88 740 clutch/gearbox noise
I've often been getting a slight screech, for some time, when letting out the clutch. I would also attribute this to the thrust bearing. In my case, it's not loud enough to go to the hassle of removing the g/box (I'll wait till the clutch starts slipping for that).

Thanks for reply Dave - do you mean gearbox or engine thrust bearing?

found problem! spigot bearing behind flywheel - not many balls and all chewed up.

I have the same screech, I am 99% sure that it is the thrust bearing. It may be caused by low grease/overheating
