[QUOTE=Simeon90;2937066]Any recommendations on which dongle to get? There's tonnes of them and they vary in price from £ to ££££££ and they all claim the same
I got a viecar 4.0 but unfoftunately they have doubled in price since then .
The cheapest one i can find on ebay is £17.96 but im sure that there are others that are cheaper and work just as well.
Well worth having it does such a lot more than code reading

Had it for just over a week and it has an annoying issue that I'm hoping someone may be able to shed some light on. I've done a search and found a similar thread, but it was to do with a petrol rather than diesel vehicle.

At low speeds, say 20mph - 40mph, if you ease off the throttle lightly the car kangaroos a couple of times, not violently, but noticeably. The best description is when in a manual car and you are in too high gear for the low speed.

It is exactly the same when accelerating lightly, feels like a manual in too high gear and kangaroos a couple of times. Doesn't do it every time, but it's fairly frequent. It did it this morning to me coming around a roundabout at 20mph as I accelerated for my exit, so it's not just when cruising at a constant speed (which is when I first noticed it).

If you are a bit more aggressive with the throttle it seems better, presumably because the gearbox is kicking down and revs are kicked up a bit.

Doesn't seem to matter whether it's warm or cold, although I'd say it's not a particularly pleasant drive at low speeds when it's cold, gear changes are slower than I'd like and hangs in gear quite a bit.

Dealer (non-volvo) I bought it from scanned it before I bought it and there's no codes stored apparently. I've read that these gearboxes need oil changes at about 80k miles? Presumably the latest software is on there as dealer serviced in September.

I was avoiding autos when searching for one of these cars as I was worried about gearbox issues, but the wife wanted an auto, so here we are..

Any thoughts or experiences appreciated, before I spend a fortune chasing the issue with a garage.

Thanks
My V60 with 8 speed box isn't too keen on fluctuating acceleration <30mph, it feels like it jerks back and forth between gears. It had a fluid change shortly after I got it around 127k, it's now on 147k.

Hi this was what the fluid from my transmission lookedlike after 42k miles and now that the cars is on 85k i think its time to put a few more liters of new fluid through it .
There is a filter in the system but it can only be changed by taking the gearbox apart so removing dirty fluid on a regular basis can only be a good thing .

Thanks for all the replies, I've ordered a Veepeak dongle as they seemed to be reasonably well reviewed, I'll let everyone know how I get on with it and the Carscanner app.

Going to swing by the specialist up the road tomorrow and see what they suggest (other than a diagnostic..).

Been like that since you got it, or oil change improved it?

Be wary of those translucent blue plastic ELM327 clones on Amazon and Ebay I suspect most are the same internals re-branded and the first one I had caused spurious errors with my rear parking sensors (using it would cause my PDC to fail then it would read the DTC - I only realised this when that dongle eventually died and I replaced it with the one from Argos). My parking sensors have been perfect since.

Ok, got the dongle all connected up. Checked fault codes out of interest and got the attached, which seeing as these engines have a terrible history with EGRs, I'm guessing is not good.

However, it does say test not completed, so don't know if I need to drive it. Cleared and started engine, came back.

Looked at live data and there was a % for EGR requested and EGR position and at idle they were pretty close, when engine revved the requested% moved a lot faster than the position of course.

Presumably if there was an issue then I'd have a fault code warning on the dash though.

Swung by the local 'Volvo Specialist' in my lunch break to ask if they had any thoughts. They kindly phoned the local Volvo dealer to see if there were any software updates available, which there aren't for my car for engine/gearbox.

They said they would not change the oil in the gearbox as if you are changing it to try and fix a problem they have been advised by Volvo that it will only make things worse.. They also advised that if there is no fault code indicated on the dash then they wouldn't do diagnostics as basically chasing your tail and costs could spiral with no result.

Phoned Hutton Bros near York (who I've seen highly recommended elsewhere on this forum) and they will do a sump dump for £190. Think I'm just going to do it myself.

Can anyone confirm this is the correct oil?

Thanks

You'd be best phoning and giving them your reg to be sure.

How many drain and fills are you planning on doing? 8 litres will be enough to do two, but you won't have enough to do a third.

Simply draining it once and filling it back up again isn't going to do a lot. You need to do that a few times to get cleaner fluid. Depending how bad the fluid is, it could need doing 3 or 4 times, or if really bad, maybe even more than that.

At your mileage though, I wouldn't think it would be too dirty, but you only have enough fluid to do two drain and fills.

I guess you could see how you go doing the two drains, then buy more fluid to do it again if needed at a later date. Just don't attempt to do a third drain and fill with only 8L of fluid because it isn't enough.

That's a fair point Kev, my thought was to do two changes then buy an extra litre when I needed it for the third.

However, I've just read up on JWS3309 and I don't think I need to splash out for genuine Volvo branded, going to go with some Millers from Opie, can get 10 litres for £78
