I have had similar problems with the handbrake on every MOT for the first couple of years of having a V40 (52 plate bought 2012) and eventually narrowed it down to the the cable on the left becoming encrusted in rust and seizing - this in turn stops the return spring on the caliper releasing properly and over time stopping the auto-adjust working. This seems to be worse on the passenger side as the rubber cover over the cable entry point is rubbish and even on a new cable has disintegrated very quickly, water then gets in and everyone knows the rest. I took some photos (http://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showth...=196596&page=2) when I did the cables last year and this year it passed with no problems but I am still weary of it happening again - I now tend to leave the handbrake off and in gear so that the caliper doesn't get stuck in the 'on' position.
Here's another pictorial guide on the handbrake cable replacement procedure too from pierremcalpine (http://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showth...=v40+handbrake) Having just had to do my rear discs/pads (new thread to follow ) I checked the handbrake operation having wound the pistons back in and made sure the cables were free and there is a slight gap to the stop on both sides but the auto-adjust works and the handbrake holds fine too (I gave a liberal squirt of WD behind the lever arm). Ultimately I would like to refurbish the calipers but needed to get this done quickly... |

I think you are on to something, Umski. I had the same issue as you which eventually prompted me to replace the cables. Prior to replacing them I basically had to carry a hammer around to slam the spring mech back down whenever it seized. The good news is that whenever it does seize you will smell it when you next exit the car so it's hard to miss. With the cables now replaced I have had no further issues.
I regretfully went with aftermarket cables and I think that the little rubber grommet design is even worse on the new ones. Should have gone OEM. Regardless, when those little grommets split or tear it's the beginning of the end...
