Default Battery Changeover

Done all the tests but my D5 needs a new battery, will be fitting it myself as the Spanish parts people just recommend longer cables to reach the terminals !! They cannot find the right one !! The question is , Should I put jumper leads on the clamps when removing the old battery (keep power on) and then just reconnect to the new battery , would this be the best way of not losing anything ?

There shouldn't be any issue with disconnecting the battery.

Make sure the key is in Position 2 (ignition) before reconnecting the new one though

Battery prices have been high and steady in the US for the past 18 months or so.
What size/type/cost battery did you end up with?
How old was the old one? just nosey,

Evening all,

Just a question regarding re-connection of the battery.

I see on this forum several times the recommendation of having the ignition in position 2 when re-connecting.

Why is this?

The owners manual states wait 5 mins after ignition off before disconnection, but does not mention anything about having the key in a certain position before re-connection.

I changed my battery out must have been 5 years ago and just followed the owners manual instruction.

To me, having the key in pos 2 when re-connecting would cause quite a surge on connection.

from what I heard it reduces the chance of damage to components (perhaps by allowing the headlights etc to absorb some current?) and also stops the airbags going off

how true either of those things are I couldn't say for sure. I've done it both ways and everything still works

with key in pos2 there was definitely a spark when connecting negative, presumably because of the increased amps being pulled

Honestly i've never had an issue connecting it without the key being in position 2. Not even sure where I heard that from.

I have a feeling it was in the handbook for my P80 V70 Classic. Might be different for the P2s

My R has a bigger battery than the standard P2s. Can't remember the code off the top of my head.

Though my S60 had an '096' size battery, cost about £85 with halfords trade discount. I'm assuming they are probably the same as your D5.

you can put whatever you like in there really, it has a huge space, mine came with the standard little one and I put a much bigger one in.

that one fitted but there was still another 2-3" or so to go when looking at the bottom clamp, i had to wedge a little block of wood in to hold it
