Question THULE roof bars help required

Hi forum people,

I have brought a pair of Thule roof bars for my S40 so I can put my bike on the roof when taking it to events / races. I brought the bars off ebay and they are in excellent condition, they came with a print out of the component parts and dimesions for fitting to the roof, but no mention of the grub screw type thingy (inside the T slot) that adjusts via the end of the bar with that long allen type tool. Any of you know the procedure for assembly and fitting the bars to the roof please ?

I am dubious of putting a £2k cycle on the roof only to find that it is on the drive after I have pulled away - still on the rack & bars.

I did try to get an answer out of Thule before posting this question - but they just kept reffering to the .pdf that came with the bars ?

These are the relevant parts...

Many TIA

Thumbs up Thule Roof Bars

Hi Andy,

It's fairly straight forward to secure the roof bars to your car, assuming the S40 has similar arrangements to my S80.

The roof bar feet are clearly marked FR front right, FL front left, RR, rear right and RL, rear left so they can only be fitted the correct way round. Assuming they were previously fitted correctly to an S40, the support feet should be locked onto the cross bars in the correct position for you. If not, the measurements are shown on your diagram and adjustment is via the locking arm in each support foot.

Ease out the plastic end cap on the end of each bar which is connected to the long allen key type thing, wind it anti-clockwise until the bracket which fits under your door frame is slightly loose. Position the bars on the car in the correct position as shown on your diagram, there may also be locating markers in your rain channel or on the actual door aperture to assist you.

When you are satisfied that the bars are correctly located, wind the end caps and allen rod clockwise and you will notice the bracket coming back up into the support feet. Keep going until the rubber foot pad is just starting to take pressure on the roof and repeat the same procedure on the opposite support.
Now tighten them both together, either with assistance from someone on the other side of your car, or by walking round alternating the tightening sequence. Make sure that the roof bars remain equal to each side of the vehicle, hence why you don't fully tighten one foot before the other as it will pull the bar too far across (hope that makes sense?).

Finally, give each cap a final turn until it is the correct way up and lines up with the end of each bar and push the cap inwards to lock it with a click.

The bars are now tight, cannot be removed when the car doors are shut, and will carry your valuable bike in safety. I've had a set of Thule bars for years, they've been on a VW Passat, Volvo S60, S80, 2008 S80 and all I've had to do is just change the fitting kit each time, around £20 from Halfords!

Hope this helps,

Paul
