Default Soot Warning.

I am worried my XC60 is failing on me. I have an XC60 2016 D4 it has done 156000 has recently undergone a service, DPF, EGR and Turbo clean. Before all this it was burning oil quite a lot and required topping up almost every month.
I've had my car returned to me since all the work and it drives great you wouldn't even know there are issues...Until you look at the dash board (Engine light, soot filter warning and engine service required are showing).
I have spoken to a garage via email and they have told me it's time to let go and move on to another car as the whole engine needs replacing.

Has anyone been through something similar to this? I really don't want to give up my trusty XC60.

Did you have the dash warning before the work was done, and what's the oil burning situation now?

Is it FWD or AWD? Or, to put it another way, what engine does it have?

The 4 cylinder VEA engine had problems with the EGR cooler design. It clogs up and causes errors/issues. It seems that you can do a full clean of the cooler and valve each time it happens but the problem will keep returning every 2 to 4 years depending on mileage and type of use.

You can opt for an EGR delete and remap to remove the issue (circa £300) and some will point out that this not legal (although the far greater crime was Volvo getting away with the design flaw in the first place).

If you had no warning lights showing pre-service then personally I would be expecting a bit more engagement and support from the garage. It's certainly not unreasonable to expect your car to come back as good as if not better than before.

Initially it was just the check engine light. Then the soot filter and engine service. Now I’ve done all the work all the lights and warnings turn off until I drive about 10 miles and they all come back on gradually.
Oil seems to be okay for the moment that is the only light that hasn’t come on! Haha.

It’s the AWD, 4 cylinder 2.0 litre diesel

If I can be reassured that the engine itself is fine I am tempted to remove the DPF to potentially solve these issues. What are the typical signs of engine failure? I’ve got an engine light on and burning oil other than that my car runs absolutely fine. I’m managing 600 miles to the tank and it’s still got power. I’m at a loss

there must be a reason for your problem dpf should regen and be self regulating there are lots of components that need to work together for successful regen check dpf pressure sensor and pipe work glow plugs. correct operation of the egr. are all part that need to be good to stand any chance. ps just because an egr has been cleaned dose not mean its working it needs to be checked by reading live data with good diagnostics . as your garage has failed to remedy it try getting a dpf specialist to test all components to find the cause. good luck dpfs can be very frustrating faults i cured mine by using the dpf doctor.
