My car came with them - probably wouldn't have paid extra for them. But the subtlety of them is their strength IMO.

We have ours set to purple in a car with the blond interior and darker gloss wood (that I believe is no longer available). Makes for a pleasant place to be at night IMO.

As a counter example, every time I see a press shot of Mercedes cars with the bright blue lighting it makes me think of a low rent nightclub (helped along by the silver speaker grilles and other trim).
I'm with you on this, I also like the subtlety of them, they just make a very pleasant place to be. Unlike examples I've seen in Merc and BMW, where it seems to be more about look how bright and flashy I can be. I have to say though, I think the effect is actually a lot better in my second XC90 with blonde leather, compared to my first with charcoal. I think the reflection on the blonde just stands out that bit more than the black.

There is a lot of adjustment in those strip ambient lighting systems and far more colour variations. I guess the ads have the systems at high levels for impact?
In the last Skoda I had I could dim them down to a low comparable with the Volvo system. Big difference however is that they are multiple strips around the car at lower level which gives a much more even and 'cuddly' ambience. The real problem with the Volvo system is that it is just one tiny LED (or 2 in some specs) cascading light down. Multiple led at different heights gives a totally different ambience. That is why I was so disapppointed.

I do agree about the blonde interior though. Purple is the colour I use; mainly because it is the only one I can detect casting any shading anywhere.

I'm with you, I have mine set to purple in my V90 which has amber leather, black headlining and the subtle reflected glow in the fascia silver trim is very pleasant and makes the cabin a nice place to be at night.
