Default S70R - Ignition Barrel - Any coding required?

The S70R appears to have an ignition barrel problem.

The key inserts and turns to just before position 1 and will not go any further, no matter what I do. I have tried the spare key also and it does the exact same.

As a result I think a new ignition barrel is required. Does anyone know if its just a case of getting a new ignition barrel (assuming its supplied with a new set of keys) or is there any coding etc required to make the car go?

The chip in the key is read by the antenna which is a separate part from the barrel.

It might be a failure with the electrical part of the switch which is easier and cheaper to replace. Although when the switch fails usually you just get odd things like warning lights coming on in different key positions or rev/Speedo not working.

If it is the key barrel I should think Volvo will supply one identical to the original so you should be able to keep your current keys. They will most likely need you to bring the v5 and photo id and ideally the key number which is on a little bit of plastic on the key ring (I would think Volvo would have a record though).

Edit, just another thought, have you tried turning the steering wheel slightly as I seem to recall that the steering lock can stop the key turning if the cars weight is holding it in position, hard to describe but just try turning the wheel one way then the other to free it and then try turning the key.

I would imagine they can supply you with a complete barrel with new keys[they'd need coding I believe]but that would give you different keys for the ignition and door locks. They should be able to get a kit[essentially a barrel in component form]and build a new one using you existing key[s] this would save you having more keys than needed and shouldn't then need coding either as you'll be using the original keys.

Hi DSK,

How many keys do you have, and have you tried a different one?

Please let us know latest prices (presume from Volvo ) for getting a new barrel, with keys and whether they will match the originals etc. I think it will be expensive.

From what I remember it is not easy (ie possible) to change just the barrel, you have to get the housing assembly at the same time, including the barrel, and its keys.

I think if you get a new assembly with fresh keys (or a used set from a breakers) the car will have to be programmed to accept the chips that are in the fresh keys.

Steve

Photos attached for a 1998/1999 V70 which I assume is the same.

Housing is attached to the steering column with two shear-head bolts which you have to drill out.

Thanks for that Steve.

I have 2 keys, tried both, key still only turns to just before position 1. Before this there was no issue with the keys turning or feeling anything other than normal with smooth operation.

I will start off by phoning the likes of TW and Kings Volvo tomorrow and see what they say.

The car definitely will not be left with a stealer for the work but, accept it may need to get there for any computer m'larky.

Although I've not done many[certainly no Volvo ones]I've never known one where the barrel couldn't be removed from the housing. If that's the case with Volvo then they made them unnecessarily complicated and expensive.

Have you taken the switch part off first and see if it turns?
I bought one from FRF April '17 and inc. sheer screws was £228.73. Hardest part was drilling out the old screws but at least it didn't matter drilling into the old casting. Came with a non chipped key as well. Just had to give them all the car data and prove I was the keeper. My barrel had broken up inside.

PRICE UPDATE

I've ordered the lock unit (comes with an un-chipped key I understand), cost is £213.xx + VAT

I understand the key will work and allow the car to be used.

To have a key coded to the car is £140.

Hi DSK,

Does the new lock come with 1 or 2 keys?

For the key to unlock the steering lock, it simply has to match the barrel.
Will your key match the other keys that you already have (which will continue to operate the door, glove box and boot)?
It may be that using your VIN, Volvo is able to supply a new key and lock that matches the old lock, which would be good because you will then have three or more physical keys.

But if your new key(s) doesn't have a chip, then I don't think the immobiliser will let the car start. It will crank but not start, nor maybe it will start but only run for 5 seconds.
That might be where the key programming comes in (put in a chip and tell the ECU to recognise it).

You might want to clarify some of that before they have you over a barrel.

Are you going to remove the old lock yourself? Once the old lock is removed, fitting the new lock is really easy (with new shear screws). I don't actually shear the shear screws until I am 100% sure everything is doing what I wanted.

Hope that helps,
Steve
