Hi Antony

I bought a W reg (Mar 2000) 1.9d with a knackered pump. This was fitted with the short lived D4129T2 engine (I think !). When I fitted the pump I had murder getting it to start and thought like you that the pump was coded to the car. The good news is that It wasn't, it turned out that the timing of the pump was ever so slightly out. I presume you marked the belt and pulley positions when you removed the old pump and fitted your replacement pump to the same marks - try moving it forward or backward one tooth. Make sure you turn the engine over manually using a socket before you fire the engine up as I would hate to be responsible for knackering your engine.

You may have a different engine to mine so it may well be coded, I'm no expert but thought I'd give you my observations as you have not had many replies, I sought advice on the matter from these very forums and had some good advice - do a search and you should come across my previous postings,
Good luck
