This car will start and idle just fine, but when one tries to accelerate, the car will just choke down and die. My wife said that she heard a backfire then the car died and she restarted and that's when the above mentioned started. Does anyone have a clue?

Sounds like the fuel pump or relay to me, you can wire the pump up directly to test the relay, if it still messes about, its the pump, if it runs fine, its the relay.
To wire direct, remove the ashtray, to the left hand corner you'll find a flat 2 pin connector, pink and black from memory. The fuel pump relay is either green or white, i got one off ebay for my 740, was £16 + postage

go under the front of the car, look up were the bottom of the intercooler is you will see a 20mm drain plug.us a plug socket, and watch it is made of plastic,it is normal ,to find some oil .drain all of it.start engine ,for about 30 sec ,then switch off and replace plug.

othere things are check all of the crankcase breather that means the hoses running from the turbo up to the air mass meter ,on top of the air filter, half way up that hose ,you will find the agr valve.what this does is shut off the fuel pump relay for about 30 sec to a min,if you have to much pressure going up to the air mass meter, now clean hose going from agr valve over tope of rocker cover .to the nipple this has two hoses going to it,this is small hose going from inlet manifold ,[the back of it ] you must take off small hose first.from the inlet manifold then lift up the hose with the nipple and small hose together, then remove the crankcase unit the nipple fitts on to a hose that then fitts on to the crankcase unit this is fitted with two 12mm bolts clean all and refit you my have to clean the breather about once in two years .if flame trap fitted on the nipple about once a year. it is easy to break the nipple it is made thin plastic.post this to othersas a lot have the same thing so should help them .
