Default High pitch whine on radio?

Hi I have a Volvo s40 and the standard radio is making a horrible high pitch noise. It only happens when I put the radio on, I can hear the music playing and the high pitch noise too! But it doesn't happen when I put a cd in. Any ideas?

Sounds like either an earth problem or an aerial connection issue like its not connected properly. Check the roof aerial too by unscrewing it first and cleaning the connections there. Used to be electrical suppressors you could buy which prevented this sort of problem, but with electronic ignition it shouldn't be a problem these days.

Let me guess, you have one of those cheap USB power adapters plugged into your cigarette lighter socket?

They use switch-mode power conversion, and cause oscillations in the car's power which interfere with radio reception (CD, tape playback are less affected as they arent reliant on the sensitive tuning circuit)
