I did half the job last week - replacement of the outer CV boot. Took me 2.5 hours but I am a slow worker. I wouldn't be afraid of replacing a CV joint now, there are a few good write-ups such as
http://volvospeed.com/volvo_repairs_...placement.html Greg.

That is a good write-up - saved to my favourites that is!
I've got to do mine soon. A couple of questions: 1) On an auto, will you lose much/any gearbox oil when you remove the driveshaft? 2) Is it easy (or even possible) to replace the driveshaft oil seal while the shaft is out? Cheers!

Don't know, I was asking the same thing. I haven't done the job yet.

Just a quick question. Why are you replacing the CV joint? I ask because if you are experiencing vibration it may be the three legged/tripod bearing on the drive shaft is shot or both. Based on my recent experience I would suggest removal of drive shaft and taking it to a drive shaft specialist. I recently experienced vibration/wobble from the front end. Researched everywhere on this forum and internet for diagnostic advice. I found none that I could actually relate to exactly but it led me to believe it maybe the driveshaft. Visited two driveshaft remanufacturers and a Volvo dealership and they all told me that the O/S drive shaft is a weakness. Upon inspection this bearing was about to collapse.....So I bought a recon. So unless you can be 100% certain that it is the CV joint I wold get it checked out. Hope this helps you and others. Good Luck.
