Does anyone have information on how this is shaping up for the 18.8kwh version please or maybe it's too early to tell? Maybe lessons have been learned by Volvo and the the system is designed differently after a certain year?

2nd occurrence of ERAD failure - update
My not so happy ERAD story below.
I have a 2016 XC90 T8 with 63,000 miles (a bit of 100,000 km) which is coming up to 7 years old at the time of writing this. 4 years ago (30k miles), just before the manufacturer warranty stopped, the ERAD transmission failed - symptoms of jerky drive, especially when pulling away and turning right oddly. That part (32240338) was replaced, all was good. Fast forward to a couple of weeks ago, I had a different ERAD failure. It started on a hot day, and the symptoms were after around 5 minutes of driving the ERAD would suddenly disengage and ICE would kick in. It would do it either on acceleration or during regenerative braking (which felt like someone lightly went into the back of you, quite disconcerting). Knowing this was another ERAD issue I called Volvo UK first, and after some mucking about they told me to go to a dealer to get it properly diagnosed. Off to Harwoods Volvo Crawley I went. With the diagnosis done, they suspected the issue was a temperature sensor in the ERAD, the notes said "ERAD temperature sensor inside motor is dropping out causing the ERAD to switch off. Dropped subframe to check temp sensor wiring, wiring OK". They suggested replacing both the ERAD Motor (36013004) and they also had concerns the ERAD transmission was also on the way out. Back to Volvo UK for a good will payment. Volvo UK eventually offered 70% against the replacement of the ERAD transmission, and 30% against the ERAD drive. All the labour was put against the ERAD drive element, which about covered the labour but not the part itself. All in, this cost me £4164 - money I really couldn't afford to be spending. While I appreciate that Volvo did contribute something, this is not a part that should be failing at anything like the rate it is. What's also incredibly frustrating is the failed part was a temp sensor, a part I suspect will cost a few quid. So, I am where I am. Is the ERAD drive a common issue as well or have I been unlucky, or is this the next element of the ERAD which will go wrong after the transmission? Finally, is anyone in UK/I doing ERAD refurbishment? Should I have asked Harwoods to give my old transmission and drive back so I could have sold it? This might still be possible as I only got the car back at the end of Friday. Here is a pic of a shiny new complete ERAD which I didn't want.. ERAD2.jpg |

Warranty information
Hi - I have this issue on a 3.5 year old T8. Does anyone have any links/documents where the 4-year warranty is referenced?
My Volvo dealership is adamant Volvo would never extend the 3 year warranty. Thanks |

I am looking at purchasing a T8 and I was wondering if this is enough wording on a possible insurer to cover the ERAD
"All Associated Drive Train components Mechanical or Electrical." |

2017 T8 - 103k miles no ERAD issues
So after much research, in 2020 I bought a used 2017 65kmiles T8 R-design, had read this thread [!!] so hunted down an insured ALA-RAC warranty that covers EV Hybrid/ERAD failure.
October 2023 @ 103k miles and my ERAD is still good, no problems with that and I do LOTS of EV only trips so it gets a good workout, is regularly charged multiple times a day. What DID go wrong in Aug was the charger module, which sits on top of the ERAD, symptom was yellow charge light and no charge, car thinks it's plugged in when not. My ALA-RAC warranty covered this £1,600 repair bar £70 of fuses [3-year warranty had cost $500 and had 2 weeks left to run!] Volvo Swindon very helpful. "What's this got to do with ERAD failure?" you say! Weeeelllll I discovered this company in Hungary that appears to be a Volvo hybrid specialist. Turn on translate and check it out, repairs and refurb of ERAD and Charger unit I had the issue with! https://vszerviz.hu/2021/12/t6-t8-toltomodul-obc/ To quote the above site.. "In the case of new Volvos, the car transmits very few error messages to the driver, so it usually does not indicate a failure of the transmission clutch (however, the source of the error is immediately visible during factory diagnostics). There was a precedent that we repaired it, but in the vast majority of cases, the solution is to install a new structure. In our service, we can repair a fault in as little as 1 day." Thanks for the information. Very useful.
My charger packed up about a week away and it is amazing how much more fuel I am using. Is the charger definitely sat on top of the axle? I wonder if it would allow the car to run without the charger? I wonder if this Hungarian place does repairs by post? I have been looking on eBay and it seems that 2nd hand chargers are about 400 quid but my problem is that there seem to be multiple part numbers....

I'm about to be a 2nd time xc90 owner. First time was the 2.0 diesel.
I'm now looking at a T8, and have been doing a huge amount of reading on the ERAD issue, and may have some useful input for this thread (and a question, of course!) The car I'm looking at is very well priced with full Volvo same dealer history. I called the Volvo dealership to see if the ERAD already had work done - which it had in 2020 at 64k miles. The car is a 2016 model now with 104000 miles. The dealership said the ERAD that was replaced in 2020 was the newer version at that time, but has been superseded twice since then. This might be useful information for this story as I see little about what updates were made and when. As far as I can gather this probably means that there is at least one more iteration after 2020 and before the 22.5 model year with the more powerful motor. What I can't find is a good judgement of is how safe I am with a 2020 ERAD, and what the Volvo contribution or support is should it go wrong again. The dealership seemed to think the new part is out of warranty now at 3.5 years old, but that doesn't mean Volvo won't still co tribute under their 4/5 year (UK) extended coverage for ERAD issues. Does anyone have an opinion on that? |
