Default Is the Volvo C30 TDI?

A couple of people have asked me this and I don't know.

I have the 1.6 D DRIVe.

And what exactly does it mean? I know it stands for turbo diesel injection, but what does that mean exactly?

thanks.

The C30 1.6 is a CDTI engine and not a DTI engine.

DTI is older generation diesel which are usually less powerful, CDTI are newer generation of diesel with common rail operating at very high pressures which provide more power.

The 'DrivE' range of Volvos are the eco models, they are supposed to be green and eco friendly with a reasonably high return on MPG. In reality most 'ECO' models don't really return and provide the expected magical high figures. The ECO models have usually got some design features to aide aerodynamics and reduce drag, such as the wheels & spoiler etc...

And... TDI was Turbo Diesel Injection. CDTI is Common-rail Diesel Turbo Injection. Just to explain the acronyms.

Stop! CDTI is a Vauxhall/Opel term for a diesel. ACTUALLY to be super precise, the 1.6d and 2.0d as well as D2 is either a TDCI (Ford) or HDI FAP (PSA).

D = direct injection turbo diesel.

DRIVe = eco package with longer gear ratio etc.

D (Volvo combines the D with either the displacment -> 2.4d/2.0d/1.6d or with a power rating -> D2, D3, D4, D5, D6) and the numbers are Volvo's sales term. It is like TDI (VWs sales term), CDI (Mercedes), xxxD (BMW), TDCI (Ford), HDI FAP (PSA), CDTI (Opel/Vauxhall), DID (Mister Bishi), D4D (Toyota), etc. Just a sales name for an engine.

Some engines carry names which make no sense... Others have been tried to be protected as a trademark (like VW TDI) but get thrown in as a "standard" name for a diesel. Kind of like you say you want some Haribo instead of saying sweets.

Doesn't detract from the fact that TDI is referring to older generation diesels and wherever you want to put the 'C' in CDTI or TDCI etc... which pertains to the newer generation of diesels that have common rail?

If you want to completely factual then yes Daim your answer is correct.

While on the subject if diesel terminology, where do Intercoolers fit in and do the Volvo range if engines include them?

An intercooler looks a bit like a smaller radiator. It cools the inlet air, making it more dense and thus increasing the amount of oxygen available for combustion. It also reduces or eliminates the increase in temperature of the air as it is compressed as a result of forced induction (ie turbo- or supercharging). It's more complex than that, of course, but in a basic nutshell, that's about it.
Someone else will elaborate on specific models but certainly the more powerful diesel engined cars have an intercooler. As do petrol turbos such as the T5.

The last diesel in a Volvo with no intercooler would have been in the 700/900 series... The so called "D24T" with the turbo feeding straight into the intake manifold.

If you look at a P1, the intercooler sits at the bottom infront of the radiator and condensor. So the visible "cooler" is the intercooler...
