Default Rough idle, Draper HT/coil tester, any good?

Hi, has anyone tried using Draper 38898 HT/coil tester?

Im having issues with a rough idle once warm, I have cleaned the ICV, genuine plugs, leads, oil filter all changed recently. Only thing left is the coils but dont want to splash out unless i know they are the issue.

Would the tool be able to diagnose anything?

Take off the coil packs and clean the surface where they mate to the cam cover.

Have you also considered that it could be a faulty engine temp sensor, the one near the thermostat...? Disconnect it and see if there's a change in idle speed.

Had a look at the coils, check all the LT and HT(new) leads and there all fine. why would taking them off and cleaning the surface make a difference? The cam cover is pretty clean all round.

Disconnected the engine temp sensor, didnt make much change in the revs, the temp gauge went down when discounnected. I presume its all working correctly.

Is it worth trying the Draper HT testers? Although at the last service there were no errors on the ECU which should detect a faulty coil...

The main part of the coil, where it connects to the cam cover, is made of ferrous metal and can corrode or rust and cause a poor connection.

I can't vouch for the Draper HT tester but I imagine it should do what it's supposed to. You could go the old fashioned route and test for a spark at each plug - no way of telling it's strenght though.

Your engine temp sensor appears to be functioning ok.

Have you checked all the breather and vacuum hoses/pipes for fractures. If there are any a can of starting gas will help you to trace them.
