Default V70 Engine idle can be rough (Chugging)

My 2000 model V70 Auto 140bhp starts and runs well and smoothly from cold.
However, after a short run, just enough to get warm, the engine starts but is not smooth when idling - it is best described as ‘Chugging’. The engine accelerates and performs apparently as normal, but the chugging at idle does not stop until the next start from cold.

Initially I suspected a sensor mounted at the front of the engine bay, situated above the radiator. It has a flexible pipe to the inlet manifold and an electric 3-pin connection. I have considered replacing the sensor, but I have no positive reason to suspect it is not performing.

Where else do I start looking ?
