I would like to renew the ATF in my 2008 C70 as it seems a good idea but don't have the capability to do it myself so I'll have to stick with the Volvo line that it doesn't need changing unless it's been given a hard life, which mine hasn't as far as I know.

Nevertheless, I'm intrigued as why there isn't a procedure, (or perhaps there is), whereby you could simply suck all the fluid out of the filler hole then replace it with the same amount you took out so it's done in one operation or why there isn't simply a drain hole in the box to let gravity do the work?

actually, both methods exist. For DIY solution, the drain&fill method is easiest.

Is that taking the p*ss or does it represent value for money for a 14 year old car?

For the individual to take a view. of course. I had it done on mine because properly and fully, and I simply haven't the facilities (or inclination tbf!) to do 3-4 drain & fills. Cost me £300 for the XC70. I guess that's a difference of say £180 and 2-3 hours labour/faffing/disposal.

Would you recommend it? I think £300 is a decent price for this as a standard fluid and filter change is about £250 at my local transmission specialist.

I'm looking to get something done soon. My vehicle has done 52k miles and everything is fine, but obviously don't want to go too many more miles without a gearbox service.

How do you find which garages do the EDT fluid exchange? I see the same system is used to decontaminate the engine as well.

With now 130,000 miles on my XC90, which drives as new still i think £300 is absolutly outrageous. If you pump to waste and refil it’s probably £80 worth of fluid, possibly a lot less if they use westway lubricants, smith and Allen etc. that £220 to pay someone to connect a machine and turn on.

The issue is that your steering fluid will look like sludge at 120k, the haldex unit will be filthy etc. and I would change them all (and have).

You will change all fluids in the vehicle for less than that.

As many others have however pointed out it is personal however. I enjoy working on my car.

Contacted one of the garages on the EDT list but they only use the system on the engine - not the transmission.

With regards to the actual process, isn't the flushing of the transmission something that is generally advised against? The advice I've received that if a transmission is in good order and hasn't done more than 50-60k miles, a simple fluid and filter change is all that is needed. Obviously this only changes around 1/3 of the fluid, but it sounds like that is all that is needed.

EDT isn't a flush. The filter is unreachable so not a service item

Hi all.

In the preparation stage for draining my c70 aws55 fluid. Watched the video but that isn't a aws55 gearbox as my car has a small oil dip stick on the front.

Do you need Vida to reset the transmission fluid change on a C70 ? I don't have Vida and I could read why on the video this needs to be done.

How much old does the aws55 take ? 4litres ? Is the fill hole via the dip stick ?

Simon
