Hi Alan

You should be able to find the part number from the GCP Catalogue

Cheers - looks like it's 1397931-5. Might help in tracking down NOS or pattern parts.

I'm calling this (tentatively) fixed.

Undid hose clamp (handily it lines up neatly between the 3rd and 4th intake branch, and equally handily Luke had oriented the clamp so it was easily accessible, even if I did have to go and buy a "Laser Professional" long handled screwdriver.

Cleaned up the hose, checked for cracks etc, no obvious signs. Refitted, snugged up the clamp, topped it off with some 50/50 mix coolant and took it for a run. Fully up to temp, a couple of hard accelerations (a relative term I know). No overheating - not that there was when I had the issue - no obvious leaks from that hose. Heater matrix working, feed and return hoses hot, but full of bubbles so I'll need to park up somewhere flat to get those out.

So, so happy. And I (with Luke's help) talked myself into being confident enough to fix it myself. I tend to approach fiddly jobs like these with a "what if I bollox it up?" mindset so I'm really pleased it went well. First bit of mechanicking since my father passed away - me an him working on cars when I was younger was one of my happy places, even if it mainly involved passing him the right tool at the right time.

You'll probably find life easier (and less chewed Jubilee clips) if you use a 7mm socket on an extension. Chances are the Jubilee clip has gone weak so keep an eye on it as it may spring another leak. A new 25mm clip should sort it if so.

New 16-25mm clip fitted as part of the fix. All part of my extensive spares kit stowed in the rear arch cubbies

Well, I'm calling it permanently fixed. 80 miles under its belt and bone dry with no loss of coolant. Adharas now on which gave me a chance to have a good look around underneath - other than the perished brake flexi Luke mentioned it's remarkably good. Front brake shields are crumbling so might look at doing those.

Idle issue seems to be improving (in that it didn't happen this morning at all) so will leave that alone for now. ABS light still intermittent so I'll unhook the relay at the weekend and have a look at the contacts.

Hopefully we're now in as steady a state as you get with an almost 30 year old car. MOT in January and if she sails through that it's time for some preventative maintenance - stainless exhaust and replacing coolant hoses top of the list.

On the downside, one unwanted milestone today - my first ever £100 tank of fuel. At least it encourages us both to commit to finding something more frugal for the school run and shorter journeys.

I remember my first £100+ fill up, about 21 years ago. Technically it was two tanks but both were on the same vehicle and filled at the same time. Later i had a newer version of the same car with only on 21 gallon tank (instead of 2x 10.5) so had a few more £100+ fill-ups.

The scary bit is we're getting close (you've already got there!) to £100 for a normal single tank!

Good news on the coolant leak and also the idle problem, i thought the idle would settle with some use.

I feel your pain...

The 406 takes over £100 - my lorry takes £380....

I haven't brimmed the Volvo yet, I only do short journeys so I just chuck in £30 at a time...

Good news on the fix.

And on we go to the next thing
Thought I'd take her down the dual carriageway to see if the alloys had got rid of the speed wobble Luke reported. Punted it out of the T-junction, steering went all light and wallowy and the whole car started wandering. Abort mission, head home, nothing obvious when I got back. Get back from the school run in the Golf and problem becomes apparent - flat tyre. Too little time left in the day to start investigating now, hopefully just a puncture rather than a leaky rim.

Ever onwards, good luck with sorting the teething shakedown issues.

At least it should be a simple fix.

Cheers
