By 1996 all Cars sold in the Uk had to have 'cats' fitted so a B230ET made that late is unusual to say the least. As I understand it 'E' engines cannot be fitted with a cat due to the high compression/wilder cam. |

RE: 93 940 b200ft and b230ft Engine Management Similarities?
I can only go by what the VIN tells me about particular cars and have only just registered a car whose VIN tells me that it has a B230ET fitted. The reason for the cat not being fitted to B230E (non-turbo) is that the "E" signifies that the car does not have emissions regulation equipment fitted and can thus use leaded or unleaded fuel. The use of leaded fuel is what precludes the fitting of a catalyser. As the later B230E and ETs were modified for unleaded use there would be no problem in fitting a catalyser. Incidentally post 1993 is the compulsory catalyser year as by that date all cars were able to run unmodified on unleaded fuel. All the best, Peter |

RE: 93 940 b200ft and b230ft Engine Management Similarities?
hi, in my experience i find the 230 to be quite a bit more economical than the 200. 200 engines dont seem quite powerful enough to pull such a heavy car whereas the 230 seems just right and therefore less strain is applied to the 230.
As for the ET and FT there is no difference between them. the ET was used in non cat models and the FT in cat models. just another part number change by volvo. I have fitted many ET engines into models with cats they make no difference whatsoever. The only problem you may find is with the ECU. the 230 is different from the 200 but if you put a 230 in a 200 you should only get a minor tickover problem which seems to make the engine miss a beat once in a while. All the ancilaries are the same including the lambda sensor and crank sensors. Make sure you mark the flywheel / drive plate at top dead centre before you remove it as it is damned annoying when you forget and have a choice of 12 positions to try it in when replacing. best of luck and i hope this helps somewhat. Regards, Keith |

Keith there is a difference between ET and FT models in that the ET was made to run on leaded fuel whereas the FT was made for unleaded fuel to go with the emissions control equipment fitted. The later ETs were made for either fuel. All the best, Peter |

FT's also had diferent cams and injection systems (T cam and LH2.4 versus the ET's A cam and Motronic). ET's had 182bhp and FT's 165bhp

Peter, all Volvo engines post 1975 run on unleaded and this is a fact.

There were also some ET with LH2.2, at least in Sweden. That is also not compatible with LH2.4.

That is contrary to what I was told by Volvo Personvagnar AB.

RE: 93 940 b200ft and b230ft Engine Management Similarities?
Yes George that is correct, but the B230E and ET were originally specced for leaded and will run on 98 Octane unleaded not 95 Octane unleaded, unless specifically catered for in ECU/ICU as there is a timing difference between the two types of unleaded fuel. All the best, Peter |
