if its the bearing/oil seal, sorry then compared to sorting leaky brake part/seal,, yes sorry.
unfortunatly (or fortunatly?) its going to be a "jack up/wheel off/ hub off and have a good ol butchers and see whats wet on the insides and where from, im not leaning towards brake part ,, as you say the fluid level is "right" and they work as they should, a leak would drop the level,, and if it was that much of a leak (looking at the damp spot) youd be loosing brakes/fluid to a noticable ammount. I hope im wrong and it is something "easy/simple/cheap" to fix, i spent last Xmas /new year replacing brake hoses + brake pipes on mine.

Righto, not looking too good then. Daunting from my view. No chance of getting under cover unfortunately, Mike. Gordon's hanger is topped out right now. So it's gonna be a cold investigation & just hope it's something I can fix.
I'll strip it out tomorrow, weather permitting & take some more pics.

Getting the halfshaft out is pretty easy, Caliper off, brake drum off, handbrake shoes out and you'll see the nuts that hold the back plate. The tricky bit is changing the bearing. The oil seal is trapped behind the bearing and its retaining collar. You have to drill and split the collar to get it off, the bearing can then be pushed off the half shaft. To put it back together (and apart) you need a press or the Volvo tool. The Volvo tool is basically an enormous 2 legged puller with a series of collets. If you change the seal it isn't woth trying to save the bearing even if it is OK. Buy the 3 piece repair kit. If it is cold, and you're working outside one cheat is to pull the entire halfshaft complete with bearing and seal out of another car in a scrappy. Not best practice but I and many others have done it before; it is a very effective quick fix. |

Right, I don't even know what a half shaft is...............yet! Tomorrow is gonna see me learning!
andy_d no no egg sucking at all, all advice is welcome. I did drain & refil the diff with Texaco API GL5-SAE90, but erm...... checking my history file that was in July 07 at 175,752 miles! It's now on 195,500 & some & I've not checked it since So if this 1/2 shaft seal thing is letting by, does that mean the diff has drained?
