EML - starting problem
Guys, is there anyone in the Stevenage area who has the ability to obtain the codes from the Engine management system.
I noticed that when I started up the car to drive a short journey to the next village the car stared with a kick, but the ran fine. We drove the 5 mile or so to the location and parked up for ten minutes. Then when I came to start the car it kicked, much the same way as it would if the battery was flat and the starter didn't have enough juice to turn over, but the battery is fine and once the car was started it ran fine (all be it with the EML on). We took a careful journey back home, but the light still remains on, when the car is started. The car is a 1999 V70 on an S plate. 2.5l 10 valve, with around 120K on the clock. Any hints and tips would be helpful, but without the codes I won't know if it's a small cheap fix or a costly one Cheers

Thanks for the links Chris. I've contacted a mate who knows someone who works for a local garage who has a reader. The only draw back is he won't be able to do anything until Tuesday due to the bank holiday.
From the description of the "fault" the consensus is a possible fault with the crankshaft position sensor - either way lets hope it's a cheap easy fix

A generic OBDII code reader won't work on this car, you will have to use the LED method or a Volvo specific code reader.

Hi Chris - I've knocked up a LED tester as per the link and it flashed a code of 3-1-4 which according to the list of codes is indeed the camshaft position sensor.
I'll look on line for the approx cost of a new part and get it fitted. From what I can see by googling this on Youtube the sensor is fitted into the engine juts below the distributor and then clipped to the wire loom near the air filter, so shouldn't need half the car to be dismantled to fit it, so should be a reasonably cheap fix labor wise

Uhmmm.. searching for the part it seems that it could be one of two types due to the different mk of the V70, and some sites give conflicting parts.
My v70 is a 2.5 non turbo, 10v, 1999 on an S plate - original body shape - can anyone advise on the correct BOSH part number please

Can anyone confirm that this is the sensor, and if so what BOSH part I should get
TIA After reading the haynes manual, that looks to be the rpm sensor...

I should think the surest way is to take it out and look for the part number which should be on it.
The camshaft position sensor is on the air filter end of the exhaust (rear) camshaft, you photo is of the crank sensor. Last edited by Chris_Rogers; May 5th, 2013 at 22:47. |

Thanks for the diagram - I would of ordered the wrong sensor !
It seems a simple job to replace the part. Undo the cable from the connector, remove two bolts and the part comes off ? I've been advised to get genuine Volvo or Bosh parts. Whilst that's a keen price I take it that's pulled from a car which has been scrapped for parts rather than a new part ? Oh and does anyone know if the EML will go out or will it need clearing. If it needs clearing is there a simple way of doing that, much the same way as the flash reader ?
