Default AC Compressor

Our sons much loved 850 has a failed AC compressor.
Definitely started chewing itself up when the ac turned on and squealing the belt driving it.
Quick look on eBay reveals quite a number of compressors available from the USA but all extremely expensive anyway and then having to add freight to Australia. Cannot find anything local. No one rebuilds them either these days - throwaway items.
So I'm hoping someone on the forum knows if they have an equivalent to another brand car that might be cheaper to search for. eg: I got the impression that some Ford F-series trucks use the same compressor but I don't know what years or what to look for?
Maybe there is a simple modification to make a modern day cheaper compressor fit that I could find here?
Any help and suggestions on equivalents to look for would be appreciated. I'd love to help my boy out if I can or else he's facing a huge invoice at the local AC mechanics here in Sydney.

When mine failed (in a similar fashion) I simply got an exchange one from my local motor factors, who supply mostly to the trade but were happy to serve me. Can't remember how much it was, but not massively expensive IIRC. Might not work where you are, but just thought I'd mention it.

@ Luxobarge.
Did yours seize?
Just asking as I've got a similar issue here I think.
Aux belt smoking and barely cranks over on the starter
Aux belt removed and viola.
Just need to confirm my theory with a non Ac cars belt, these are shorter and bypass the Ac pulley.

Hiya, no it didn't seize, but it would have done if I'd left it much longer. The bearings in the main pulley were shot and making a hell of a row, they'd have collapsed and locked solid before much longer. I also had my doubts about whether it was leaking a bit of gas too, as it holds its gas much better now it's got a new compressor.

HTH?

Cheers

Thanks for the reply.
Think mine has seized in all honesty.
Ac hasn't worked for years on it but no noisy bearings or anything as a warning.
Will have to 100% confirm with a non ac belt.
Cheers

Ours didn't get to the point of seizing as we switched off straight away we heard it. Sounded like a cement mixer when elec clutch pulled in and engine revs took a dive.
