First thing I do with every car I own is throw the locking wheelnuts/bolts away and fit standard ones!

In fact, I suspect that airguns are only a problem when they're not pressed hard against the wheelnut.
Most tyre fitters merely hold the gun in place.

Surely the golden rule must be to never let an airgun near LW nuts.
Remove them before you get to the tyre-shop and critically, put them back on YOURSELF.
Not True - I've had my V70 from new, I remove the wheels twice a year to clean the arches, and torque the lockers up by hand to 'only' 100Nm.

One McGard locker shattered, but there is an easy fix - see here http://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showthread.php?t=115289 Post #2

Yes, but how do you create enough inward pressure on the nut with a torque wrench, to ensure it doesn't slip ?

The only thing I'd ever risk using would be a crucifix wheelbrace - which allows the balanced application of inward pressure and torque.

The McGard key didn't slip, the bolt head shattered.

At 50 lb/ft. it is easily done with right hand on the head of the torque wrench, pushing inward, and the left hand on the business end of the wrench.

Slightly sideways on this topic. A couple of times I have been confounded by McGard bolts - the inevitable reason being a worn or lost interlocking socket. The solution is very easy. Photograph the offending bolt in-situ, email to McGard in Germany, and they will - for the princely sum of about 15 Euros send a new 'key' socket by return. If, as I did, you find the original bolt packing (after I had bought a new one - and worse still, finding another good one in the spare wheel well!) with verification number, McGard will apparently honour their lifetime guarantee and send you one gratis.

For myself, I am sorely tempted to dispense with the b*ggers - as they are generally a complete nuisance.
