V40 engine knocking sound

Hi, I have a V40 just over 4 years old only 24,000 miles. It has developed an engine knocking noise on right side. Recovered to garage cannot find the issue said to keep an eye on it and go back if it gets worst. They agree they can hear an engine knocking sound driver side internally. Other option is to strip down the engine at a cost and then perhaps not find an answer. Concerned that if I keep using the car it will get worst and end up with a very large bill. I am also concerned that this car is very low mileage and has already developed an internal engine fault. The knocking sound can be heard when idle more so when engine is cold and it has developed a different engine sound when in use almost a straining sound when accelerating. Any ideas?

Was the garage a Volvo dealer? Certainly sounds like an internal fault but that needs to be investigated. If you continue to run the engine inevitably it will cause more damage. I would get it checked by someone who knows Volvos.
