Gary,
As you know I have only just recently had practical experience on my S60 racer of the amount of fine abrasive particles let through by foam as opposed to paper or gauze filters and the expensive cumulative damage that can be done. Don.

The long term durability of foam filters is certainly questionable when looking at the evidence on your turbo compressor wheel. Out of interest what are you using now? Cheers

On the face of it, I'd have expected foam and gauze filters to offer similar performance - as long as they are equally well oiled. As I understand it, it is the oil which actually does the filtering, and the foam/gauze is simply there to suspend the oil in the way of the passing air. However, I'd be very interested to hear more about the shortcomings of foam filters, as I run a pair of ITG filters on my 40s, and the last thing I want is small particles going unfiltered.
It is very true that (assuming your engine doesn't swallow a washer) it's the fine particles which cause the damage. I've never understood why people run open trumpets on sidedraft carbs, when you're gaining almost no power over running filters, yet adding a great deal of wear. cheers James |
