Alan can post on the forum support section for the admin to edit his original post with the index.

Right chaps,
What I have done is started a new thread called: 'New (to me) 1980 Volvo 244 - Index' - that should be easy to find, and I can update it from time to time.
Alan

Default Bloop Rectifier/Regulator...

I've just been out to the motorbike shed to fix the 1976 Suzuki B120's indicators, which I noticed had stopped working when I last started it (the lights only work with the engine running - scary at night!). Armed with a wiring diagram and my automatic multi-meter I was pleased to find: they had fixed themselves in the intervening period (6v electrics, 45 years old... it just happens sometimes).

I'm on a roll!
I started the Bloop again the other day - the indicators had stopped working again. I ordered another relay (a generic 6v one, cost £5.99 I think) which arrived, but that didn't fix the problem, so I thought I'd better fix it properly rather than being lazy and guessing.

It took about a minute with a multi-meter to work out what was wrong this morn. With the engine running the new relay only had 3.5v at its input terminal - it is fed directly from the 6v rectifier/regulator, so the problem must be there. Following the wire back the issue was clearly a really corroded output connector on this little Stanley DE45 regulator:

... I gave it a clean up, a spray with some contact cleaner and replaced the spade connector on the wiring side with a new one:

and... Robert is your mother's brother - a bit over 6v at the relay, nice bright indicator lights and as a bonus the headlamp and tail lamps are bright as well (bright in this context is a relative term: bright compared with a pushbike with a dynamo, very dim compared with a modern bike or car).

The rectifier is 45 years old, it works just fine but the two integral terminals are pretty frail, so I've ordered a generic one (cost £5.99) to replace it:

... I will of course keep the Stanley DE45 safely in the Bloop spares box in case anyone wants to return the bike back to its orifinal state one day (just like I do with the RB) :-)

A good find and solution Alan!

Always worth checking the obvious like all connections, particularly the earth connections too. Removing the bulbs and rubbing the lead/solder connections on the base across the grain of a pair of jeans and also tweaking the bayonet holders to give a tighter connection on the body of the bayonet bulb base plus cleaning the pins in the bulbholders can also work wonders on the brightness.

Particularly on a 6v system Dave - the error budget is tiny.
