The D5 is a brilliant engine, bulletproof, good on fuel, sounds awesome and goes very very well.

It's a diesel, a very good diesel. We have two Volvo D5 diesels. Our C70 is petrol. That is all

My C70 is a D5. Pulls like a train and as I've got an autobox it's a relaxing "boulevard cruiser".

I didn't want a sports convertible - I'm too old!

Dag and indeed dag.

Mine pulls like a train, also has an autobox and makes a nice noise. I don't want a sports convertible either, but a diesel can't be the right answer for a convertible.

You've said that a number of times and the reasons you've given have been refuted by those who disagree, including me. It's obviously a matter of opinion not an objective fact.

About what, 10 seconds at idle in a D5 C70 would suggest otherwise to most objective observers.

Perhaps we don't spend as much time sitting there idling with the roof down as you do, certainly I don't. I prefer to drive it.

BTW, have you ever driven a D5 C70? I tried a T5 before I bought mine and am happy with my choice.

Funny how people can have diametrically opposing impressions, isn't it. All engines must be started, and stop-start is perhaps more of a feature of modern driving than we'd like.

I have explained at some length (or at least on multiple occasions) why I made the choice I did, based particularly on engine smoothness, overall NVH, engine note, where there really are polar opposites between the two units.

Why was a D5 preferable to a T5 in your particular situation?

I accept and respect your reasons for preferring your choice, I just take exception to you saying that others have made the wrong choice.

In my case it was a toss-up between the D5, D4 and T5. If other aspects of the cars I tried had been different (eg spec and condition) I might have gone for the T5. But all in all, also taking account of consumption on long trips, the D5 came out top.

I should add that my current engine is noticeably quieter and smoother than the D5 in my previous V50. Whether that's by design or luck I don't know.
