Glad to hear you got it sorted, for a spare key i would strongly advise going to Volvo, might cost a bit more but will keep working long after aftermarket copies have failed.

If memory serves, the 96-on 9xx, 850 et al all used a similar RFID chip to Ford models of a similar era (probably due to Fords controlling interst from 96 and outright ownership from 99) and i've known a few Ford orignal keys fail but mostly aftermarket copy keys fail the most.

You could try Bradons, now i believe called Trustpart (were a Volvo dealer, now an independent specialist and parts supplier) or something similar, i think they're somewhere in the Wembley area so a trip through the pipe and a trundle round the 25 unless you fancy your chances on the North Circ.

For aftermarket, you could try one of the cobblers/key cutting places, they usually have code grabbing machines to get the code for you new RFID chip in the key, not sure if they do fobs or not. For a fob you could try one of the independent places that deal in those.

However, i'd hazard a guess Volvo might do a combined key and fob package that would work out cheaper or at least similar to the cost of buying the two items separately from an aftermarket source. If you have a local and trusted Volvo parts dept, give them a call, explain the situation and the advice you've had, see if they can massage any figures for you to help with the cost and decide from there.

Hi Dave,
many thanks. I do know and use Trust Car Parts Ltd, 0208 985 2255. Steve who works there is old school and used to work for Volvo, a good guy to know and deal with. He's just ordered for me a recon steering rack for my 850R.

Thanks again for your advice, much appreciated.

Regards Paul

I found with mine that several key-cobblers and the local (very knowledgeable) locksmith couldn't do a proper copy as the chip code is a rolling code which needs software from Volvo to set up. What I did get from Timpsons is a mechanical copy key with no chip (he had to order in the blank specially), it operates the door lock and steering lock but will not start the car as it cannot signal to the immobiliser or alarm, at least if I lose the proper key I can get into the car and move it.

This company might be able to help but the problem issue is that they have have the car at their shop for the programming. They are in Tring so not a desperate distance away. Guess price from £120 up.

Lost mine. Tried some local locksmiths, who wouldn't touch it as it was a Volvo!
Ended up going to dealer in the end.
All i can say is shop around, as one dealer was nearly £100 more expensive than the other.
In the end it cost me just over £200 for the key without fob, this was for a new key, transport to the dealer to program the key and programming.
Thankfully i have key insurance that covered it.
After all this found the first set...in the cooker! how? no idea...

Oh and while there it was found to have outstanding recalls...for a 96 car! All done, now amongst other things have working heated seats!!...lol

I bought a new chipped and coded key for my 850R from my local key cutter / cobbler. It is a JMA blank and cost about £45. I cannot comment on how long it may / May not last, have been using it for the last 18 months so far.

It's a 1999 V70. Any ideas/help would be welcome.
If you removed rear number plate and drill a hole in the center of where the number plate was and you can get some long nose pliers and move the central Locking rod and unlock the tailgate

I would have gone with this but it seems that (with the right equipment) it is possible.

Locked myself out of a Mk3 Golf once, with the keys sitting on the passenger seat. My son rescued me by pulling on the top corner of the passenger door - but it did take three of us (two pulling the door and my wife fishing with a straightened wire coat hanger.

Oh! How we miss those family get togethers!!!!!!

Well Paulcas it gives me immense pleasure to say I told yoo so and fantastic yoo found your keys but yoo must admit what a stupid thing to do !!!!

Yep - unless Volvo UK have kindly put the details of your rolling code into the shredder before recording it on the computer yes they did it to me - then Steves will be able to sort. If not there is a key cutter in the Tesco car park at Leytonstone just off the Green Man - attitude stinks but boy does he know to work the immobiliser to ensure yoo have a matching coded key, I paid 95 quid 3 or 4 years ago, no probs since

And tell Steves to get me a full set of P1 70 genuine wheelbolts can ya, which I am happy to swap for the incorrectly seized front brake pad clips he flogged me last year !!
