XC60 Buying Advice
Looking to buy a XC60 2.4 d, any common faults with it? I have heard of 2.0 Egr problems are there any issues with the 2.4 looking at a pre face lift car around 2010 model?

Xc60 purchase
My advice don’t buy one better cars out there. To much Ford input in the Xc60. Avoid 2.0 ltr diesels. 2.4 d5 great engine. My car is 2012 model main problems seem to be suspension, coil springs top front struts top mounts fail regularly. Clutch on manuals same as Ford kuga / mondeo DMF Common failure the list could go on. Expensive if main dealers are used.

The 2.0 diesels I think you are referring to are the 4-pot Ford/PSA units that found their way into the S40/V50 and early Mk 3 V70's but never in the XC60. The 2.0 diesels in the XC60 (D4 badged) are Volvo engines and set the benchmark of reliability. I expect the reason you are seeing repeated suspension issues is because you haven't been using main dealers and subsequently had poor quality non-Volvo pattern parts fitted. All XC60's with a manual gearbox have the Volvo M66 unit and Volvo spec clutch (not Ford), which again sets the benchmark of reliability. The XC60 suspension is pretty much the same as all P3 Volvo - V70, S60 etc. some rear suspension and rear axle on AWD models is shared with the Mk1 Kuga.

Back to the OP....
The 2.4D is the 5-cylinder Volvo engine and did not have the EGR issues that some post 2015 MY 4 cylinder Volvo diesel engines had (even these have now all been fixed under a recall). If you are looking for an auto - get is properly warm and check you can change from P to D and between D and R without any bangs or significant knocks, check all the gears shift ok with no shift shock when accelerating and decelerating. Check all electrics - door locks, windows, buttons, etc. problems are rare but can be expensive to fix. All usual used car checks - steering, suspension, strange noises, fluids, leaks, etc. Unless you're handy with spanners and it's cheap - only look at cars with good history.

I concur with everything Tannaton has said. You get what you pay for. I’m sure you’ll be very happy with a good XC60, the poll on this site shows 92% of owners are happy with the xc60. But there will always be the odd owner who has the worst car in the world.

1) New Battery Required on 1st Car - It was coming up 6 Yrs Old 2) Replacement Alternator as mine developed a rumble - Replaced under used car warranty 3)New Brake Pads & Disks on Both - Wear & Tear 4) New Tyres - Again wear & Tear 5) New SRS Module - 2015MY Car there seems to be a few have had the same problem on here recently so maybe worth bearing in mind. As mentioned above check the service history both of mine have been dealer maintained & FSH kept up to date. Gearbox on the 5cyl is meant to be sealed for life but there's recommendations that the fluid is changed, but if the change is outside of the dealer network or specialists ensure that the correct fluid was used. 5 Cyl engine is strong & should pull well, It's a big car so don't expect it to be the most economical on short runs. On a run if your not to heavy footed you should see pretty decent returns (Mine sits at around 38 total average for mainly long motorway runs).

Xc60
While I accept some owners seem happy with the Xc60 mainly owners with low mileage, I spoke with a Volvo specialist who has worked on Volvo all his working life and he has told that coil springs and top mounts are prone to failure infact since and put my first comment up, I have been back to him to have two new rear coil springs and passengers side top strut mount replaced this week they were only done last summer. Genuine parts used as well.
