Default XC60 B5 AWD mild hybrid Fuel efficiency

Hi everyone,

I am looking to buy my 1st Volvo and have narrowed it down to a new XC60 B5 AWD. I would have ideally preferred the diesel engine but Volvo doesn't offer you one in the Ultimate trim. And hence the only option I have is to opt for this petrol motor producing 250 HP.
Can anyone please tell me what fuel efficiency figures can I expect for city driving and motorway driving? I do not want to end up hating the car every time I tank up. Can I realistically achieve 28-30 mpg?

Thanks a ton.

Cheers.

I have the FWD version of the B5P and over 4740 miles in 15 months, my average has worked out at 31.34mpg - this has been mainly short journeys (less than 10 miles) and the occasional 100 miles A road round trip.

On local journeys, I generally get 21 to 28 mpg and on the longer runs around 42 mpg.

Hope this helps you, the XC60 is a cracking car, I have had 4 of them!

Just about to change mine for an XC40 Recharge Ultimate (full electric) though.

Good luck.

Lovely choice of car - just playing devil's advocate here, is another question 'what diesel hybrid Volvo can I buy where I can realistically achieve 60-70mpg?'

Only asking because my car is old tech now (late 2016), but it's averaged 72mpg, with 290bhp. Can you up spec the diesel version xc60 to get roughly the trim you want?

Sadly Volvo has stopped being flexible in its variants and spec options and the new cars have a very rigid model lineup with the only options that the customer can choose are exterior and interior color options I wanted.

I did another TD of the Petrol XC60 yesterday and boy it is smooth. Driving a petrol after a long time puts a grin on your face. But the TD car averaged 23mpg! In fairness, it was a TD vehicle and I believe the car might just return around 25 mpg if driven sedately.

It's all down to personal preferences and circumstances of course, but my ancient Impreza Turbo manages 23mpg on urban runs when I take it out, and it had a reputation for being heavy on fuel twenty odd years ago !

Fully understand the smoothness point of petrols. Shame their isn't a V6 diesel hybrid, as I find my 5 cylinder thrashy at low speed or when cold. My Audi V6 was a lot smoother...

Rule of thumb is most petrol cars will only climb just into the twenties on the urban and hit maybe 40 on a run VW TSi's aside that is as they are sippers.

That leaves you with a heavy battery and additional motor to contend with, however depending on how it's used will depend on how good it can be, if you are constantly on the brakes in an urban setting and the battery is getting charged regularly by it who knows how high you can get it. Mway though I'd assume it will struggle as it's got limited regen chances and once the batteries are discharged the engine is contending with the Mother in Law sitting under the bonnet in addition to the normal weight the car carries if it wasn't a hybrid.
