Default Fuel smell inside the car?

Hi All,

My car, a 2018 V90, D5, 2L has developed an issue, when I park up after a drive (long or short), I can smell fuel within the cabin.

There doesn’t appear to be any fuel leaking on to my drive.

Any idea where I can start looking?

Someone said the charcoal filter might need replacing? I don’t know if it has ever been done.

The car does quite a few short journeys during the week, for a decent run out ever fuel weeks.

Cheers

My V60 hybrid has a diesel heater that has a slight whiff sometimes. Not sure if the V90 has one.

Hi,

Thanks for the reply.

Stupid question, but how would I tell if my car has one?

The smell isn’t always there, just occasionally……perhaps when the heater is running?

Thanks

I’m not aware of any common fuel leaks on these however the EGR pipes are common for splitting. You normally notice this by fumes entering the car but exhaust fume is a different smell to diesel.

Have you popped the bonnet and had a look. Removing the engine cover is easy and if it is a fuel leak it should be fairly obvious.

Have you taken the cover off the engine to see if there are any leaks ? For example around an injector or injector return pipe etc ?

Hi Guys,

I managed to get a look yesterday, as the weather has been quite poor.

Two things I found, was there was some oil under the fuel rail. I don’t think this is the source of the smell, but still a concern. Not sure where this could be coming from? There was nothing obvious. It was black oil, not new oil….so hasn’t been spilt when filling the oil up. Kitchen towel shows where the oil is in the picture.

The 2nd thing I found, I think might be the source of the smell! There was a pipe snapped off the diesel exhaust pressure sensor, the breather I think. So I’ve done a bodge until I get get it into the garage.

I would say you have found the source of the smell. As for the oil I would suspect the cam cover may be leaking. It’s a well known issue.

Default Fuel injector

I had a similar smell today in my S40 and it turned out to be a leaky injector seal
