Update.
I sold the car with the noise still apparent. I was very upfront with the new owner about it.
Anyhow, I had a pm from him a couple of days ago - on another forum - and he has cured the noise.
It was the oil filter. He fitted a genuine Volvo filter and now it's all good.
I'm really pleased it turned out to be an easy and cheap fix.
He loves the car, so all is good.

So V70 owners, if you get a similar noise, check out your oil filter if it's an aftermarket item. He reckons the filter I fitted was vibrating too.

For the metal canister type both the volvo and Mann (who I suspect make the volvo one) have a check valve in them which helps with startup oil pressure. An aftermarket filter may not have the valve and could lead to delays in reaching oil pressure when starting from cold.
A genunie volvo filter costs about £7, it's hardly breaking the bank.

Funnily enough - It was the same with mine as Regards the kazoo/High pitch whine. Id used a cheap, Kak filter. Changing it cured it too

A new serpentine belt cured what sounds to be a similar issue in my 98 T5 auto. I was relieved it wasn't the auto box.
