Default Strange sound from cylinder head??

Hi all,

I'm not very mechanically minded so please forgive if my terminology falls short. Lately I've begun to notice an odd little sound which appears to be coming from the cylinder head (I think) it goes away at higher revs but when I start the car, there it is again - a soft intermittent rattle which appears and disappears quite regularly. I thought it might be mistiming a little but i'm not burning through my oil and the exhaust smoke is a normal grey colour...I can't say how long it's been there...perhaps always :-) I always have the stereo on .haha. Ive certainly never noticed a lack of performance with the engine so maybe I'm just paranoid but, I'm sure you'll all agree, paying a mechanic wads of cash to alleviate one's paranoia is perhaps best avoided, if at all possible.

I'm completely stumped.

I know this is a bit vague but maybe someone else has had a similiar experience.

Its a 2000 S40 XS 1.8 petrol btw.

Thanks for any comments
Fearg

You will get more info if you post this in the other S/V40 section. Does your car have the VVT engine? Is it the GDI engine? I seem to remember some-one asking a similar question on here before, but can't remember the solution. I'll have a wee look see. Try some of these. http://www.volvoforums.org.uk/search...earchid=215170
