Question Burning smell at start

Something wierd has happneed in the last few weeks with my T5 AWD...

After the car has started for a few seconds I get a burning smell for 1/2 a second or so.

So start car, wait a couple of secs and you get the smell for 1/2 a sec or so.

It smells like burnt anti freeze / screen wash but I have checked and I am not losing either.

But... If I look at my gearbox it looks 'wet' although there is nothing dripping from the engine / gearbox onto the tray that is under the sump and the car doesn't mark it's spot like my Spitfire does.

This has me completely flumuxed. Anyone know of anything that could cause this?

Thanks in advance,
Stu

You haven't had a new exhaust or part thereof replaced recently have you?

I had a similar issue with the sealing paste used to join the sections. For weeks after it was fitted I smelled burning for a a short while after starting up. It's gone now.

The only new thing that I have on the car is a power steering pump. The fact that it started soon after having this fitted makes me think there may be a leak so that when the car is turned off for a while enough fluid leaks to make a burning smell for a second or so when the exhaust reaches temp.

The car is booked in to be looked at on Wednesday - I'll post an update when I get it back...

OK... Got the car back from the garage yesterday.

The burning smell was caused by a pipe behind the engine. When I asked what the cost of the work was I was told 'this is a service'. This is by the garage who replaced the power steering pump. So I am guessing that something was not put back right. Not too bothered as it's fixed with no extra cost.

However... It has to go back at the end of feb for a leak from the gear selector. Seeing as they have to dismantle half the engine bay to reach it I am not looking forward to that cost. They have said parts will be cheap, but expect a lot of labour time...
