Yep pull on ,again off it just doesn't stay on !its like the relay is either missing another feed to stick on or my indicator stalk should click and stay on but I'm sure it works the relay way does any body know how this system works? Wiring diagram would be great? The Blue light comes on when lever is pulled all way back all lights work ! Why why why can I not get it to stay on! This is an mot failure when it comes around let alone if I need them down a dark alley!

This seems to be a common problem but have tried all the remedys in the threads! Is there a light sensor ? That only enables high beam at a certain light ? Find it hard but run out of ideas

No light sensor in the 40. The stalk is pull towards you, should be flash only when the lights are 'off' (9 o'clock) and full beam, clicked to activate, when the lights are on (12 o'clock). If the stalk is clicking when lights at 12 0'clock, this is ok, it sounds as though this may be at fault though, so try with your new stalk first. Otherwise, you may have a dodgy headlight relay in your CEM or rotten wiring under the radiator.
Check the voltage on the headlight connector with and without the bulb. If you are getting 12ish Volts without the bulb and 0 Volts with the bulb in, then it is almost certain to be a faulty CEM relay. If however you don't get any voltage at all, then most propably the loom of death . Check out this thread http://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showthread.php?t=67584

Your owners manual should cover correct operation of the switches. I know on my '04 XC70 the position of the 3 way switch will determine whether the main beam latches on when pulling the stalk towards you.

Hello
This is the kind of headlamp switch I have... On my V70 Classic, when the light switch is in the position in this photo, I can flash main beam, but cannot turn main beam on permanently. If I click the switch so that the white mark is pointing up to the light symbol, then I can activate main beam. If I click the switch to "10 o'clock" I activate the side lights - no real reason to do this except as parking lights. Incidentally, my V70 has day running lights - the headlamps are permanently lit. The switch actually makes no material difference to the headlights, it simply activates the dash illumination. The little screw that you can see bottom right of the switch panel can be adjusted to switch DRL on or off.

Are you having any other symptoms ? My 02 S80 has just started doing this exact thing, however also the dash illumination is very dim, and the headlight adjustment up/down function is not working, also the headlights won't turn off...lights are on main beam and though the high beam works whilst pulling back the stalk, it won't stay on...
also affected is the radio illumination and the gear selection panel... |
