Default Headlight levelling!

We have a 2012 V60 SE Lux, it has xenon, active bending lights. The active bending feature is working fine on both lights but the self levelling has stopped working on the drivers lamp, it works perfectly on the passenger side. The driver side lamp is currently aiming way down at the ground.

Do I need to replace the whole headlamp to resolve this?

You need to get it plugged in - the ABL system has its own ECU and you check all the sensor readings as well as exercise the motors in the headlights.

If you have a motor issue - yes you'll likely need a new headlight but it is possible to dismantle them though if you're into intricate jobs.

Well I managed to fix it for £0 which is lucky as Volvo wanted £750 for a nee lamp. It was stuck at bottom of its travel. Took the headlight out, pulled the back off and gently pushed the gimbal while winding the manual adjuster. Wound it all the way up, back down again then set it somewhere in the middle. Re-assembled and fitted back to the car and all is good again. I do wonder why it was stuck though, will have to keep an eye on it happening again.

Now that’s a result, well done you and saved £750. That’s a nice week away with the wife after lockdown ends👏👏
