Default Dented/crushed sill..

When I got my Volvo there was this nice crush damage to the drivers sill.
The top is fine its just water collected under the door makes it look worse, my question is could a dent specialist pull this out?
Or should i risk aggro at MOT time by putting filler over it and painting it.
It has no rust there or holes, its just been done by a Mook who should not be allowed near a trolley jack or a car.



Its the only mark on the car too no rust anywhere or big scratches just this and i'm wondering if its worth trying to sort as i do intend to keep the car for a few years.

Hmm theres an arrow exactly where you should jack the car up lol does the door close ok and the seal is still good?

Yes the doors fine its only cosmetic on the bottom of the sill. The door seals still good. Been lots of flooding round here so i know its fine the old girl swims quite well really.

Looks like someone's put it on a 2post ramp wrong. Don't filler it, thats a 70s bodge way to hide the fact your ford Cortina had no sills or rear arches, just leave it or get a proper bodyshop to fix it. They will either drill it, pull it out and spray it or chop it out and put new metal in.

Please don't filler it. I really doubt it'd fail an mot on that, I've seen far far worse sill dents go through countless mots

I wouldn't of filled the whole dent i would have pulled it with a slide hammer first. I meant if i do skim it with filler and its detected at the MOT it would fail as they would assume i have just fillered a hole.

Like i said its the only thing that lets the outside down so i'd like to repair or have it repaired as i am going to keep the car and smarten it up with new wheels/suspension and phase 2 lights.

Grind off the paint, then get someone with one of these to pull and massage it

A slide hammer and a resin stick would work.

The sticks are at the bottom of the page.

Heat the resin stick using a hot air gun, apply to the centre of the dent, attach a slide hammer and very slowly, tap the dent out

They can be applied directly to a painted surface and if you warm the paint up first, it won't crack while it's being pulled out

Good luck pulling that out.... You will need to weld a new section into the sill
as it is a structural member, which has now been weakend, and will be even more weakened after its been pulled about with a slide hammer.

best option is to remove a section from a scrap car in good condition, unles you can get hold of a replacement full sill pressing

Similar problem on wife's Peugeot - took car to my local MOT tester, who advised that it wasn't a failure point, unless structural integrity compromised or likely to pose a risk to pedestrians (exposed sharp edges. . .), and most likely to be recorded as an advisory. Seems each vehicle is different, but for most the visible part of the sill is cosmetic, so damage can look awful but is of no real consequence. That is exactly what happened at MOT time. I asked about repair, and their advice was either replace the whole panel (££huge ouch) or cut panel from donor vehicle from scrappy and weld/graft in to wife's car.

only way that sill would weaken is with rust, its only the outer skin thats dented and not by much

personally i'd get a slide hammer and pull the thing out, skim of filler to tidy up, prime and paint. you may have to drill a small hole in the middle of the dent and put a self tapping screw in for something that the slide hammer can grab onto properly, will require welding up after not just filler
