XC40 B4 Fuel (Petrol) Consumption
I bought a XC40 B4 R-Design (194bhp) a couple of months ago. In the time I've had the car the instrument display has been indicating a typical petrol consumption of around 32 mpg for local running around, with about 39 mpg on long motorway runs. This isn't quite as good as I had expected. When I had a dealer's XC40 B4 courtesy car recently the instrument display on that car was indicating 38-39 mpg on local runs.
My question for other XC40 B4 194bhp owners is: what typical petrol consumption do you get with your car? Am I getting a higher than 'normal' fuel consumption? Thanks in advance for any information on this. Stan. |

It sounds like I have the same model as you, and achieve no better mpg.
The best long run of about 250 miles showed 41.2mpg, but that was a one off. What could be achieved by careful driving I really dont know. That sort of dedication and patience is not in me!

Thanks for the reply Rustyfrog - your experience at least tells me that my car isn't too out of the ordinary. I can live with that. Incidentally, my longer runs frequently take me from Northumberland to Burscough - not far from your neck of the woods. Thanks again.

Best overall 40.2 mpg, for about 3 months. Mixed driving - country lanes, A and B roads, limited motorway. AWD version.

I've researched this a bit more. Taking the fuel consumption data listed in the official Volvo Owners Manual (don't know why I didn't do this earlier) and converting all the 'Litres per 100km' to MPG, the figures achieved by my car are all within the official range.
Incidentally, on a recent 370-mile round trip involving a mix of motoring I did an accurate fill-to-fill fuel consumption check. I came up with an 'actual' consumption of 38.6mpg, compared with a dash instrument reading of 38.4mpg. So the dash reading is accurate enough. Thanks for the replies, all. Stan. |

I find that fuel type can make a big difference. When measuring full tank to full tank, Asda E10 returns an average of around 36mpg, whereas Tesco Momentum E5 returns an average of 42mpg which works out cheaper per mile. I’ve tried Shell V-Power, but it’s far too expensive to be economical.
The best I get on individual journeys is 52mpg over 35 miles, mostly motorway and not rushing. A large proportion of this is through roadworks restricted to 50mph. This is a regular journey and the results are fairly consistent. This is a FWD B4. The AWD models will differ.
