My First Volvo.
Hi all, I just bought myself a Volvo, and thought I'd join up for the advice and banter you lot offer.
It's the 2.4 S70 CD TURBO, and I got it from an old boy down the road. It's been serviced every 8k miles on the dot, and is in almost perfect condition, with 11months test and no advisories, and the paint work is almost showroom. The door cards need a little work, it seem's the leather is coming away on the back 2, but hopefully I can reglue it. It also has a scuff on the front left bumper, but again, it's an easy fix. The interior is in very good condition, and everything works as it should. I am a very happy chappy. Now for the advice bit. Is there anything I should check on the car? Are there any common issues to look at? The mechanic at work is going to service it for me on Monday for the princely sun of 12 bottles of Stella... can't complain on that score! Any way, thanks for reading guys. |

Hello,
And welcome along A few Cornwall/Devon area lads running around in S40's frequent the lounge area. Re the car, the main thing is to ensure it has had a recent timing belt replacement, if not or your not sure have a new one fitted. The door cards are too difficult to glue, the best bet is find replacements if they bother you, some have two lines of horizontal stitching to reinforce this area. The '70's are very reliable and your model will have a nice bit of power. Enjoy. Cheers Last edited by OvlovS70; May 23rd, 2014 at 23:37. |

Hello,
Not at-all , just a bit difficult to access. A fella on the forums, Luxo, has created an excellent photographic write up of the various tasks he has tackled around his car. This link will take you straight to the timing belt replacment: http://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showth...=114983&page=7 Cheers Last edited by OvlovS70; May 24th, 2014 at 01:21. |

Also for general "things to check" have a read of the buyer's guide, which is a sticky thread in the "Sales" section of this forum.

The S70 is an under-rated car, and one of the very best Volvos ever. All the quality, bags of space, a good DIY car, excellent all round. At 100k with a good history you really should have nothing much to worry about. Cam belt no more than £250, the other thing to check would be it's ETM history, but if it has an ETM chances are that its already been sorted.
Hope you enjoy the car Cheers Jack |

Congratulations, you have picked one of the most comfortable and trouble free
car Volvo ever made. I had mine, 2.5T, since 2004. 10 years and 100k now with no major issues, this car keeps going effortlessly. It is a keeper. The only issue they have is their flimsy disc brakes. I had to change mine three times during that period. They are quite expensive to buy and replace. The third set were Bendix, a cheaper alternative, than the originals. Enjoy it. |

This might be your first Volvo, but I guarantee it won't be your last! Welcome on board - and to Volvo ownership, too. I've had a few Volvo's now - a 760 turbo, three 240's, a V70 T5 and an 850 T5 - and I must say they remain my favourite make of car, having owned Jaguar, Mercedes, BMW and other less prestigious makes. I don't think you'll be disappointed. Ignore the uniformed who say Volvo's are old mans cars; my V70 T5 and 850 T5 would give most modern hot-hatches a run for their money. A friend of mine drove my V70 T5. He had a Honda Fireblade so he was familiar with the V70, particularly when he had one glued to his rear wheel, sirens and blue lights in full swing! |

@Kieran I quite often pop in there actually, when I used to have this area as my delivery route I used to pick up all his eBay sales every evening!
@Mr Plinge technically it's not my first Volvo... when I was 16 my old man gave a 363 to practice tinkering on and to drive around the fields... but the less said about that the better! I'm not to sure about the new Volvos if I'm honest. They seem to be going plastically and are turning into just another Euro box on wheels. Mind you that's the EU idiots fault... spoiling decent cars and ruining our fun. |

I pulled my van in next to the volvo tonight after work to find a note put under the wiper.
Basically a little old lady scraped her car along the back of the volvo, leaving behind a 18inch long by 4 inch wide scuff on the bumper, a deep one at that. To say I am furious is an understatement. The volvo was parked up off the road for goodness sake! Anyway I spoke to her, and she immediately offered to pay for the damage. I emailed the chap who done the corner scuffs, and he quoted £126. I phoned the lady, and she said she will call him tomorrow. Thank god the bumper isn't dented or cracked!!! |
